Sonos had its first big hardware release since 2024 this year, launching a new Bluetooth speaker, the Play—but apparently the company’s not done cooking yet. According to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filings first spotted by Janko Röttgers at Lowpass, Sonos is gearing up to launch the Ace Ultra, a new pair of wireless headphones.
There’s not a ton of information in the filings—much of the documents is redacted—but there are a few details, including the existence of several colors, potentially five altogether. Among them are light gray, black, “Agave,” “Blush,” and “Sand.” The company’s last pair of headphones, the Sonos Ace, were only available in white or black, much like the recently released Play Bluetooth speaker and the Era 100 SL.
More intriguing than new colors are hints at support for voice commands, which is something the first generation of headphones didn’t have. As Bloomberg notes, the addition of voice commands with the Sonos Ace Ultra would fit into previous clues about the company’s general direction, particularly its interest in AI and pushing further into the smart home category.
Recently, Sonos expanded the ability of Sonos Voice Control to encompass some smart home controls, including support for Philips Hue products, so users can control their lights. The company has also partnered with Amazon to offer Alexa through its speakers instead of Sonos’ own voice assistant.
Whether the Ace Ultra will expand those smart home abilities remains to be seen, but Sonos does have a tendency to tightly integrate its hardware, and there is evidence that Sonos Ace Ultra may include support for Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi connectivity. Its last wireless headphones, for example, had a Wi-Fi feature called TV Audio Swap that allowed anyone with a Sonos Beam soundbar to switch seamlessly from listening out loud to listening inside its wireless headphones.
No matter what Sonos does with the Ace Ultra, it’ll definitely look to avoid the same fate as its last pair of Ace wireless headphones, which were far from a commercial success. We may not have to wait long to find out more, as Sonos CEO Tom Conrad said there’s an event slated for September that could very well act as the launch for the Ace Ultra.
