Research-types at Sony’s Computer Science Laboratories have developed a concept called ‘transSticks,’ virtually connected Memory Sticks that act as simple networking cables between any two devices that support the standard. Although there are certainly bugs to work out, I’m sure (like security, although they seem to be keeping that in mind), being able to throw away networking cables completely would be great — even if it necessitated every device having a Memory Stick slot. When someone develops a pairing standard that works like this between different card types, that will be more impressive.
Or wait, what if the wireless radios were inside the devices themselves and operated over a standard protocol, like 802.11b? I suppose that’s just crazy talk. (I feel the need to disclaim my hateration — this is actually pretty cool.)
