We’ve known for a while that a Steven-Spielberg-directed adaptation of Ernest Cline’s nerd-fantasy novel Ready Player One was happening—but now we know when it’s actually going to land in theaters, and it’s sooner than you might think: December 15th, 2017.

The 2011 novel, set in a future world where a VR online video game (littered with references to 80’s gaming classics and nerd culture at large) has captured the hearts and minds of much of the world’s population, has been eyed for adaptation pretty much since it hit shelves to much acclaim. The Warner Bros./Dreamworks release is helmed by Spielberg, who is also producing alongside Donald De Line, Dan Farah and Kristie Macosko Krieger.

While we weren’t as big fans of Cline’s similiarly-nerdtastic book followup Armada, it’ll be interesting to see how a book practically fit-to-burst with references to licensed material will make its way to the big screen. Will we be getting the actual properties themselves, or fictional alternatives? It’d be weird if it was the latter, given how much Cline relied on that heady 80’s nostalgia in RPO.

Guess we’ve only got 2 years to wait before we find out.
