Strange Horizons' new editor-in-chief, Niall Harrison, writes:
Since its inception in 2000, Strange Horizons has sought to encourage and support new writers, to provide a home for a vibrant new generation of science fiction and fantasy authors who showcase a diverse range of voices and perspectives. We have also sought to provide a home for a new generation of readers, readers who want to step outside the boundaries of traditional fiction. Furthermore, we wanted to provide content to our readers free of charge while still paying our contributors professional rates, and we wanted to do all of it while remaining volunteer-staffed and without being dependent on advertisers or corporate interests.
During these ten years, we've published exciting new material every week, and the material in our archives includes fiction from acclaimed authors such as Elizabeth Bear, Joey Comeau, Carol Emshwiller, Theodora Goss, Gavin Grant, Alaya Dawn Johnson, Jay Lake, Justine Larbalestier, Sandra McDonald, Tim Pratt, Sarah Prineas, Benjamin Rosenbaum, John Scalzi, Nisi Shawl, Carrie Vaughn, Greg van Eekhout, and Jo Walton, just to name a few. Stories and poems from Strange Horizons have been reprinted in major anthologies and been shortlisted for major awards, but even after all of that success, we haven't lost our focus on encouraging new authors. We bring you many of the brightest up and coming stars in the field; last year alone, at least 10% of the stories we published were their authors' very first professional publications!
A huge part of our success has been down to you, our readers, who enable us to keep our magazine going. Strange Horizons relies on donations from readers in order to stay in business. This September, we're trying to raise $7000, and we're hoping that you, Dear Reader, will be able to help us to reach that goal.
The magazine still needs $3,000 to help it reach that goal. Start the holiday giving season early by supporting one of the longest-running online magazines devoted to science fiction. Every little bit helps, and they're a non-profit so all donations are tax-exempt.
