FiringSquad has posted a long, well-written, and comparatively pithy discussion of Intel’s current hole. The chip company, once the only player in a vast market, is now seen as a second-tier player in the high performance game. Because they shot their wad with Centrino, they are currently perceived as catering to—and are producing chips for—the commodity home PC market. In a world of 64-bit processors for a few hundred bucks and low-voltage CPUs in USB keys, that just ain’t going to cut it.
