So a car company, which I’ll call Jaguar (if I may be so bold), is offering up a chance to win a black iPod to promote its X-Type automobile. And what’s interesting, besides the chance at a mythical black iPod, is the fact that there was once 75 of these custom-painted devices, at least according to MacCentral. But why? I presume that the other 74 had something to do with Jaguar, too, but where did they go? Were they given to other X-Type buyers? If you know, please share.
My guess? I think the original iPods were black, and then were later changed to white, just like they did to Jesus.

MacMinute has noted that the picture Jaguar seems to be using is the same picture shown on ColorWare’s site — the people that do aftermarket modifications of iPods, iBooks, and whatever else. I didn’t really think the Black iPod came from Apple; it’s more just curiosity about what the other 74 were used for (and when they might be popping up on eBay).
It should be noted, too, that ColorWare will sell you a black (or whatever color) iPod right now if you want to pay their premium.

UPDATE: MYSTERY SOLVED
A little ringing bell told me:
Alright, here’s the story I got from someone on staff who has one…
Jaguar loaned out 75 new XJsomething-or-others to various marketing people for a weekend and gave them gift bags, which included the black iPods. All the iPods are laser engraved with the Jaguar logo.
And there you go.
