The Bug DAB Radio

By

Reading time 1 minute

Although Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) hasn’t really caught on here in the States, it seems to be off to a solid start in much of the rest of the world, and if new products like The Bug here are any indication, it’ll probably do quite well for itself. Besides all the other benefits inherent to DAB itself, The Bug allows TiVo-like pausing of live radio broadcasts, the ability to rewind to the beginning of tracks, and can even record music to SD cards (although, strangely, only to MPEG2—I suspect that there is some appeasement of some recording industry types somewhere in that choice). If you’re really into home recording of DAB, though, there’s even a USB port for quick transfer to your PC. All in all, not a bad piece of kit for 150, although I’ve yet to see a proper review talking of sound quality and the like. (Thanks, Richard!)

Update: Reader Florian tells me that DAB broadcasts natively in MPEG2, which would probably explain the format weirdness, but not why I see the ghosts of the RIAA in every shadow. (That’s because they’re after me! Aaah!)
