After years and years of waiting, Captain Marvel is nearly here—and we have our first impressions of the film thanks to early press screenings. Good news? It’s apparently pretty cool. Marvelous news? Expect something weird, fun, and with lots of Goose the Cat goodness.
The social media embargo was lifted on Captain Marvel last night, ahead of full reviews dropping closer to the film. Here’s a taste of just some of the reactions online, starting with io9’s very own Charles Pulliam-Moore:
So, I saw Captain Marvel yesterday.
The movie’s good, and there are a *number* of points throughout it that subtly and unsubtly address the fact that dudes apparently have an issue with Carol being strong and nonplussed by things.

The movie feels very much like the introduction to a new character meant to be centered in a new phase of the franchise, which works both for and against the story at times. The key to enjoying it is just liking Carol (easy) and letting the previous Marvel phases go (less easy.)

#CaptainMarvel is a great origin story. Brie’s buddy cop chemistry with @SamuelLJackson is so much fun and her relationship with Lashana Lynch is the real heart of it. Ben Mendelsohn and the cat both steal the show.
