Among all the other goodies being packed into the brand new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the phone comes bearing the newest generation of Apple's M chip—the M8. And it might finally turn the iPhone into the fitness tracker we've been waiting for.

The new sensor should be able to know whether you're running, riding your bike, or walking, and it'll be able to estimate distance as well as how far you've gone. It'll even be able to track elevation for the climbing-inclined thanks to its very own barometer, which will pick our your relative elevation by measuring air pressure.

There's also a new and improved HealthKit to take advantage of all that the M8 offers, but the majority of that information is going to come straight from the all new Apple Watch.

I am frankly surprised people actually want the phone for this purpose. I have a dedicated device (fitbit one) for this. Why on earth would you want to carry your phone literally everywhere? It's far too bulky. I have no idea the fitbit is there. I can see this good whene one specific fitness event is tracked (say, a nice morning jog), but a true 24/7 tracker this is not nor will be. **note, i have had an iphone since the first one.
