With sudden cancelations comes sudden irony. Days after Prime Video announced Spider-Noir was no more, the show went and took home some Emmys gold.
The Creative Arts Emmys were held over the weekend ahead of next week’s Primetime ceremony. Of the 11 categories the superhero series was nominated for, it won five of them: stunt coordination for comedy programming, sound editing (for a 1-hour comedy or drama), single-episode special VFX, series cinematography, and title design. Not the first show to be canceled after racking nominations or even winning some, but the timing is hilariously perfect.
Backstage after taking the awards, the show’s stunt coordinator Freddy Bouciegues was asked by press if these wins would un-cancel the show. His answer? “Tell me who to call, and I’ll ask them.”
Spider-Noir was reportedly canceled due to its production costs and audiences not really tuning in to the show. (That’s why you don’t do a binge release on two different platforms, two days apart from each other!) Maybe the Emmy wins were for something flashier, Prime Video would reverse course; as is, it seems another Marvel show will take Noir’s place. Fans are sad about the show’s fate, but its lead Nic Cage has made peace with it.
“[I] said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man,” he told Deadline. “Onwards, upwards, inwards.”
