‘The Odyssey’ Keeps on Sailing as ‘Toy Story 5’ Hits $1 Billion

Before Spider-Man comes and does whatever a spider does, audiences just can't get enough of 'The Odyssey.'

No new major genre movies this weekend means the older ones continue to dominate the box office.

That’s good news for The Odysseywhich continues to rake in money. Variety reports that its sophomore weekend saw an additional $87 million domestic, down 30% from its impressive debut. It’s common for movies, especially R-rated ones, to fall by 50% or more if they opened at $100 million, but that’s not the case here. In fact, this makes for the second-biggest week two for an R-rated movie behind Deadpool & Wolverine back in 2024.

At time of writing, Nolan’s Greek epic is at $639.6 million worldwide. The $1 billion benchmark is in sight, and one he’s previously hit before with the Dark Knight sequels. As is, The Odyssey is basically within arm’s reach of Interstellar’s $774.7 million global take. Its legs will depend on Friday’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day and which of the two they’re feeling more. (Or, alternatively, how many are interested in seeing them back-to-back.) A point in Odyssey’s favor is that it’s got IMAX on its side; as Variety notes, showtimes for 70mm screenings are sold out until September.

Should The Odyssey get to $1 billion, it’ll come after Toy Story 5‘s crossed the line. Pixar’s latest film hit the milestone this weekend after adding another $10 million domestic to its haul. Now at $1.022 billion worldwide, it’s the highest-grossing movie of 2022, slightly ahead of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s $1.011 billion. Great news for Disney…the Pixar staff who worked on the film, not so much.
