The Phantom is officially on display at E3 – as discussed earlier this week on Gizmodo. As reported, it will have no external ports. That means no piracy, people! Arrr!

Rumors of this platform were thought to be a hoax at first … because wouldn’t you have to be crazy to release a new game console in these uncertain times? Ah, but you see, it’s not a console, it’s a game receiver service. Well, crazy or not, the Phantom’s going to have a 40gb hard drive upon which you will store games that you have downloaded from your broadband internet connection. Perhaps the weirdest thing of all is the “controller” – if you can call it that. It’s actually a keyboard with a mousepad. Apparently you’ll be able to play multiplayer with the Phantom against fellow gamers on their PCs.
This model goes directly against the Xbox philosophy. Microsoft refused to develop a keyboard, insisting that the Xbox was for the livingroom, damn it, and no one uses a keyboard in the livingroom. Well, now they can. That is, if they really want to play PC games on a TV.
