Sony’s new high density disc format, the Professional Disc for Data, is about to hit. Not to be confused with the new HD DVD format that was recently adopted, the first PDD drive, the BW-F101, uses a blue laser to squeeze as much as 23 gigabytes onto each disc. Apparently the drives cost a ton, so they’re aiming them mainly at businesses, rather than consumers. Sony says they’ll have a next-generation of the PDD that uses 50GB discs in 2005.
