Blood-Sucking Parasite Named in Honor of Bob Marley—Umm, Thanks?

Marine biologist Paul Sikkel of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro recently discovered a new species of parasitic gnathiid that infects the skin of fish living amongst Caribbean coral reefs. So, since the second most known Jamaican cultural export is those guys from Cool Runnings, Sikkel decided to grace the memory of Marley with forever being associated with a blood-sucking parasite. “I named this species, which is truly a natural wonder, after Marley because of my respect and admiration for Marley’s music,” Sikkel said. “Plus, this species is as uniquely Caribbean, as was Marley.” [Nothing To Do With Arbroath]
