Say Goodbye to Schedule 1—New Government-Backed Study Confirms Medical Uses for MMJ

Marijuana's current Schedule 1 status relies on a key tenet, "There is a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or other substance under medical supervision." Too bad a new study, funded by the federal government and recently published in The Open Neurology Journal, runs directly counter to that sentiment.

From the study:

Recent advances in understanding of the mode of action of tetrahydrocannabinol and related cannabinoid in-gredients of marijuana, plus the accumulating anecdotal reports on potential medical benefits have spurred increasing re-search into possible medicinal uses of cannabis. Recent clinical trials with smoked and vaporized marijuana, as well as other botanical extracts indicate the likelihood that the cannabinoids can be useful in the management of neuropathic pain, spasticity due to multiple sclerosis, and possibly other indications. As with all medications, benefits and risks need to be weighed in recommending cannabis to patients. We present an algorithm that may be useful to physicians in determining whether cannabis might be recommended as a treatment in jurisdictions where such use is permitted.

Essentially, the study found that smoking weed does impart tangible benefits and relief to pain sufferers, therefore warranting further and wide-spread study—at least further investigation than the whole nine case studies performed over the last decade. Of course such a conclusion would suggest that marijuana does, in fact, have an acceptable medical use and would force the feds to shunt weed down to at least Schedule 2 (along with opium, cocaine, and methadone). Blue Labs Guardian Monitor Takes the Guesswork Out of Growing Hydro

Hydroponic grow systems offer many advantages over growing in soil but require much more supervision and oversight. Specifically, the hydro gardener must ensure that the pH, PPM/conductivity, and temperature of the fluids are all within acceptable limits. If they aren't, the plants and subsequent harvest will suffer. That's where the Guardian Monitor comes in. This triple-action device monitors the three essential fluid variables and displays their relative values in real time. In addition, the Guardian offers one-button calibration and the ability to set user-defined alarms. [Big Buds]

Israel's Pioneering MMJ Movement Puts the US to Shame

While medical marijuana continues to face an uphill battle in the United States, it is being embraced by one of our closest allies—Israel. Doctors prescribe it for everything from cancer pains to PTSD with more than 10,000 registered users legally buying bud from the country's premiere medical facility, Jerusalem's Hadassah Medical Center.

It was there—specifically, the bone marrow transplant cancer ward—that medical marijuana first found use for its anti-inflammatory properties. "We started to use it as a routine treatment as part of all the other medications that we give. Slowly we enlarged the use to other cancer patients. We opened here a center that can help patients who are not hospitalized, from outpatients," Dr. Reuven Or, of the bone marrow ward, told NPR. Check out the rest of the story here, it's a fascinating read. [NPR via WeedPornDaily - Image: Getty]
