There are Two Kinds of People

There are two kinds of movies in this world: The kind that rely on tired cultural cliches to advance a plot and develop characters, and flops.

James Franco Reads Howl by Allen Ginsberg

Allen Ginsberg sure knew how to freak out the squares. With a single line from his poetic masterpiece Howl, "who let themselves be fucked in the ass by saintly motorcyclists, and screamed with joy," he not only garnered his very own obscenity trial (which apparently was still a thing back in the Puritanical Era of 1956) but also became one of the most famous poets of the 20th Century. This animated adaptation by Ginsberg's good friend, and The New Yorker cover artist, Eric Drooker, lends a hallucinogenic feel to Ginsberg's vision while a hazy James Franco narrates. Howl's broken into six pieces, you can find parts 2-6 here. [Open Culture]

Prohibition Rebellion Proof of Drug War's Failure

President José Mujica of Uruguay has had it up to here with cannabis prohibition and all the bullshit social issues it presents. He isn't the only one. The Guardian's Lisa Sánchez and Steve Rolles break down how the Latin American (and United States of American) backlash against cannabis prohibition isn't just a passing fad like the notion of "peace on earth, good will towards men" but is likely the death knell of Reagans' War on Drugs.
