The news of new Black Mirror episodes coming to Netflix was ultra exciting for fans of the show, but now Netflix officially announced they’re doing 12 new episodes total. At the moment, only seven episodes of Charlie Brooker’s cynical yet realistic vision of technology and the future exist.
The new episodes will “premiere internationally in all Netflix territories, outside the U.K. and Ireland.” Dates there are still being determined.
It’s all very exciting — a whole new bunch of Black Mirror episodes on the most fitting platform imaginable. Netflix connects us with a global audience so that we can create bigger, stranger, more international and diverse stories than before, whilst maintaining that ‘Black Mirror’ feel. I just hope none of these new story ideas come true.
That’s Brooker, probably with a little wink to the recent story about British Prime Minister David Cameron, which was a bit too close to the pilot of the show. He’s currently writing the new episodes.
Here’s my question: Premiere dates and episode roll-out schedule will be revealed later, but 12 episodes is double the number of shows from the first two seasons combined. Does that mean we’re getting four new seasons? Will they spread them out?
Production is scheduled to start later this year but you have to wonder if 12 episodes is stretching things too thin. The beauty of Black Mirror always felt like each hour was so unique and dense, you never wanted too many. Hopefully, Brooker is just incredibly inspired.... or will spread these 12 episodes out over some time.
