Since it's launch, there's been talk about the new iPad running hot. Well, here's some proof: these images show the outer case gets 10 degrees warmer than its predecessor.
The guys at tweakers.net (Dutch) have levelled a thermal camera at both the new iPad and an iPad 2. The result? The exterior of the new tablet reaches 33.6 degrees centigrade (92.5 Fahrenheit), compared to 28.3 centigrade (82.9 Fahrenheit) for the iPad 2.
There are two things to note. Firstly, 10 degrees isn't much, but it is certainly noticeable in the hand. Second, you can notice the warmer corner that has been reported by some users—though it doesn't look like this unit has as bad a problem as some users have reported, and it actually looks a bigger problem on the cooler iPad 2. Keep your iPad overheating reports rolling in though; we want to get to the bottom of this. [tweakers.net via Engadget]
Update
AllThingsD reports Apple's predictably salty response to claims that the new iPad might be running hotter than the iPad 2.
The new iPad delivers a stunning Retina display, A5X chip, support for 4G LTE plus 10 hours of battery life, all while operating well within our thermal specifications. If customers have any concerns they should contact AppleCare.
It seems the new iPad's temperature is a touchy subject. Customers are merely expressing concerns about the product. A simple, "contact AppleCare if you have any problems" would have sufficed.—MA
