This Massive Volcano Just Blew Up Near Mexico City

The Popocatépetl—Smoking Mountain in Nahuatl—a massive stratovolcano 43 miles (70 kilometers) from Mexico City erupted yesterday causing the sudden explosion of ash you can see in the image. It’s now on “alert level Yellow, Phase 2, which restricts access to within 12 km of the crater.”
