Earlier this month Circuit City, Amazon, and other retailers started selling ReplayTV’s 5504 digital video recorder — with three free years of service (which normally costs $12.95 a month) — for the discounted price of just $150. Well, it turns out that this deal was too good to be true. ReplayTV claims that all those retailers made a mistake and that you can’t get a 5500 series ReplayTV DVR for that price and get three free years of service, and that anyone who bought a box expecting three free years of service can either pay up or return their DVRs for a refund. Either way, a lot of people who got ReplayTVs for Christmas are in for a rude disappointment.
