Spider-Man: Brand New Day producer Amy Pascal recently said she would still love to see a crossover between Tom Holland’s web-slinger and Tom Hardy’s Venom. Hardy has previously said it nearly happened, but he was cagey about the specifics. Noted blabbermouth Holland has no such compunction, though, and now we’ve got more details about why, despite Holland appearing in the mid-credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Hardy appearing in the mid-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the two characters never actually met.

Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Holland explained that, while there were conversations about merging the two universes, the timing just never worked out. “[Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group CEO Tom] Rothman is a really smart guy. I think he was building this universe, and they had this plan to merge the worlds at some point, and I think that they just never found the right time to do so,” said Holland. “I think it was in the cards … It was like, one day this will happen, and like lots of things in the creative world, it just never came to fruition.”

Ultimately, Holland said, things were going so well for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Spider-Man franchise that “…Tom and the guys at Sony just wanted us to continue on our path.”

Interestingly, Holland closely echoed what MCU head Kevin Feige said earlier this week—”Always have hope”—about the potential for a Spider-Man and Venom face-off in the future. “Anything could happen,” said Holland. “Who knows what the future of my Spider-Man looks like?”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is in theaters now.
