Torchwood Will Return... As A Series Of Audio Plays

Long have fans waited for Torchwood to make a return, after the end of the (deeply disappointing) Miracle Day. Captain Jack may not return to TV any time soon, but Torchwood will continue in another form: as a series of new audio plays from Doctor Who audio producer Big Finish.

The six-part series will see the return of members of the Torchwood team from the TV series once more for new adventures, with each part of the monthly series focusing on a different member of the crew as a mysterious event impacts upon them in different ways, before bringing them all together in future stories. It won’t be the first time that Torchwood has delved into radio dramas — there was a series of plays starring Jack, Gwen and Ianto released a few years ago, and even a special one off written to celebrate the activation of the Large Hadron Collider in 2008. It wasn’t very good, unfortunately.

Between this deal and the recently unveiled Kate Stewart/UNIT series, it looks like, after a very long time, the BBC are finally allowing Big Finish to tinker with the “NuWho” era of Doctor Who. Will the eventually give them the blessing to do audios for the Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctors in the near future? It seems likely after all this less-than-subtle teasing.

John Barrowman is currently the only revealed member of the cast to return so far, with more planned for the future — maybe the plays will be set during Season 2, or between that and Children of Earth, so we can see old team members like Owen, Toshiko and Ianto again. Plus, we could live in blissful ignorance and forget that Miracle Day ever happened, and it was just some bizarre fever dream.

We can but hope. The first audio drama, Torchwood: The Conspiracy, will release in September.

After binge watching Miracle Day again recently, I’m unclear as to why people think it is so dreadful. Feel free to rant: all explanations are welcome.
