You never know what you will find when you dig on a farm. Sometimes you may unearth old agricultural tools, sometimes just roots and sticks — and sometimes, on very rare occasions, a lead-lined bucket, filled with over $1.5 million dollars worth of ancient silver coins.
The delightfully-named Weekend Wanderers Detecting Club found the collection of 1,000 year-old coins buried 2-feet below ground in a farm in Buckinghamshire, as part of an annual Christmas dig, which they describe in detail here. Altogether over 5,000 silver coins — some of which have the images of 11th-century kings Ethelred the Unready and Cnut the Great — were recovered.
The full trove was taken to the British Museum, where it’s currently being cleaned and examined by curators.
