Why isn’t there wireless internet and phone service on trains? It’s a question that many, including eWeek’s Guy Kewney, have asked. It seems the same reasons are carted out in London as they are here: No one would use it; it’s potentially dangerous to unspecified old equipment; there’s no money in it; it might incite the mole-men to throw off their shackles—nobody has a clue. Kewney brings up an excellent point: with location-based marketing the Next Big Thing, why in the world would anyone not want to market to people on the trains? It’s somewhat ridiculous (if an occasionally pleasant respite) that two of the largest public transportation systems in the world are both radio badlands.
