Apple’s 2nd-Gen AirTags can help you find anything you attach them to, from luggage to keys or wallets. The hardware upgrades from the original AirTag are legion. Apple put a new Ultra Wideband chip and upgraded Bluetooth into the 2nd-gen AirTag, and together they extend Precision Finding range by up to 1.5 times over the original. Precision Finding is the feature that gives you step-by-step walking directions to a lost item once you’re in range, using a combination of Ultra Wideband, the iPhone camera, and haptic feedback to point you at the exact spot. Apple also added Apple Watch support, so you’re not limited to your phone for the close-range hunt. On top of the range improvement, the speaker is 50% louder than before, which matters when you’re crouching around the back of a couch trying to hear a chime.
New Tag, Same Setup
For anyone who has never used an AirTag, the setup is the same low-friction Apple experience: tap the tracker against your iPhone, name it, and it shows up in Find My within about 30 seconds. After that, the tracker uses Bluetooth signals from other Apple devices nearby to silently update its location without any of those devices knowing they’re doing it. The network is large enough that a tagged bag left on an airport luggage cart usually updates its location within a minute or two of any iPhone walking past it.
Buying a 4-pack rather than a single unit makes the most sense for most buyers. It’s easy to think of four items you either habitually misplace or would really rather not become separated from when traveling. Buying four AirTags individually at retail would run $129 at Apple’s single-unit price, so the bundle at $80 is the better math even if you only end up using three of the four. The new sharing feature lets you grant temporary location access to a trusted contact, which is useful if you’re checking a bag and want a travel companion to track it independently.
Low Maintenance
AirTags run on a CR2032 coin battery, and Apple says the 2nd-gen model lasts more than a year before it needs replacing. When the battery runs low, your iPhone notifies you. Replacing it is an easy press-and-twist operation to open the tag, replace the battery, and re-close the tag. The whole thing takes about ten seconds.
Amazon’s $80 price for a 4-pack is the best per-unit deal yet for Apple’s newest and best Bluetooth tracker. The 2nd-gen hardware improvements are not incremental-for-the-sake-of-it stuff.
