Since the next major version of Windows (‘Longhorn’) isn’t due out for another couple of years, most of the information in this CNet article is somewhat speculative. But still, some interesting things are afoot inside Microsoft’s labs, including a possible shift from sample comparison-based handwriting recognition to one that learns the users’ specific writing style, as well as built-in support for something they are calling ‘Flick,’ which sounds similar to mouse gestures, except, you know, with a pen. In addition, Microsoft hopes to make the connection between PCs and mobile devices much more seamless, with ad hoc wireless networks springing up to connect not only synchronization information between devices, but actually let different devices easily share the displays of other devices.
