Windows Mobile 7 Will Show Its Face in February

February is a month of wintery misery. But also Mobile World Congress! Where, according to Microsoft Mobile Entertainment and Devices Division President Robbie Bach, we should probably expect to see Windows Mobile 7 for the first time.

The slip, if you could call it that, came in two parts. First, on the invite for MWC:

Microsoft will be making several exciting announcements during the show. You will learn:

How the company plans to align its consumer vision and grow opportunities for the mobile industry as a whole.
How it will tackle challenging times ahead, in the face of economic uncertainty and stiffening competition.

It's pretty obvious what that's supposed to mean, though there's nothing explicit. So on an analysts call, someone asked directly: What about Windows Mobile 7? Apparently:

Things will be talked about at MWC... I've seen it and played with it, set the bar forward not in (just) an evolutionary way.

A February showoff doesn't guarantee anything in terms of an actual release date, but it bodes well for the possibility of seeing this thing ship before the end of the year. [ZDNet, IStartedSomething]

You're missing the real question: Will WM7 be obsolete before it's even released?

If they stick to their stated Q4 release, that will be after iPhone 4 and probably iPhone oS 4.0 are released, after more major Android upgrades (3.0?), probably concurrent with an updated Droid and a new Palm OS, and so on.

I don't see anything in those screenshots that isn't already available.
