Nothing in Hollywood is ever certain, even when a project is announced by Disney-owned Marvel Studios (just ask Blade). But it’s still a bummer to hear that Wonder Man, which was somewhat unexpectedly renewed for a second season on Disney+ back in March and just notched an Emmy nomination for star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, has now been canceled. The second season will not move forward.
This is disappointing for Wonder Man fans who were excited to see what trouble Simon Williams was going to get mixed up in next, something Abdul-Mateen had already started teasing. However, the star also mentioned in May that he hadn’t yet had any “creative conversations” about the second season—in hindsight, perhaps a hint that the renewal could eventually stall.
The news of the cancellation comes from Variety, which writes that, “According to sources, a writers’ room for season two was never opened, and the show’s writers have been released to pursue other projects.”
And, as with all things Marvel, Wonder Man not returning doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t see Simon or his buddy Trevor Slattery (played Ben Kingsley) again; Trevor, of course, was featured in Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
As Variety notes, “according to an individual with knowledge of the situation, while Wonder Man is not proceeding with season two, the characters featured in the series could still appear in other Marvel projects in the future.”
