Hitachi's upping the notebook 2.5-inch storage game to the 500GB level, which means that you'll have much, much more space to store all your eBooks and comics to take with you on the go. The Travelstar 5K500 will be available in 400GB or 500GB models, and have optional Bulk Data Encryption for drive-level security. It also has a power-usage level almost identical to its 5K250 predecessor, and have a 1.9 watt read/write power draw and a 0.7 watt low power idle.
In similar news, ASUS has also partnered with Hitachi to place 5K500s inside their upcoming M50 and M70 notebooks, and will have two inside the M70 for a max 1TB storage (striped). We're excited because we actually like taking all our data on the go with us instead of leaving it at home on a NAS.

This makes me sad to only have a 60GB in my Laptop. It's nice to see higher storage but I would love to see some 7.2k's with this much storage.
lol i like the poor attempt at photoshoping Olivia Munn licking one of the many gadgets she's always licking.
@CGrant: With my photoshops, you know quality is job 1.
@Jason Chen: Jason, we'll only forgive you if you:
A) Pants the new drive.
B) Zoom in next time and not make those hair strands so chunky.
I think option A is your easiest route.
I hope I can cram this into my MacBook Pro 17" soon. Besides, the drive that it has right now is supposedly doomed for failure VERY soon, according to the message boards on here & Apple's site.
kick ass. This 200gb harddrive isnt cutting it for my macbook.
I can't wait till SSD'S.. Can get past that far : )
Is that the patented cigarette holder about to lick that hard drive? Touche.
How loud is it though? The 160GB Hitachi drive that came with my laptop would make very loud, distracting sounds when it had to move the heads. I replaced it with a 320GB WD drive and I can't hear the WD at all. I wish more HD reviews would mention noise performance.
so that 1TB is actually like what, .8TB in binary values like windows actually reads them?
@djjs: Yeah, but how long until we have affordable 500GB solid state drives? 10 years?
@CGrant:I was wondering when someone would say that.
Beware of trying to put a Hitachi drive in your 15" MacBook Pro. The ribbon cable that goes over the top of the hard drive is designed for a Seagate drive and will cover up the breather hole on Hitachi drives. I tried to put a 200 GB 7200 RPM Hitachi into my first gen MBP a while back, and it didn't work well.
@GutterIsATool: Is there a work-around?
According to engadget, the drive is just another platter, not new technology. They say that it means the drive is 3 mm thicker, and probably won't fit in a standard laptop or portable case (ie OEM only).
That's interesting gutterIsATool... I found some pictures to illustrate the problem:
Hitachi Drive (note hole placement)
MCB15 hard drive cable - it would cover the hole.
MCB17 hard drive cable - the bigger one doesn't have the problem.
JohnnyAbnormal - I'd recommend just making sure you don't cover the hole. It looks like double-sided stick tape was used there; just move it to where the hole isn't. Without the tape, it would be hard to block the hole - it doesn't need to be too big to equalize the pressure.
Too bad it's thicker than the standard size, so you'll have to shelve your plans to put 500GB in your lappies.
@morcheeba: Wow, thanks! I've been looking to replace my 17" hard drive soon. It is tiny & def. marked as hideously defective according to most. It's a good thing I back up often.
Whats with that chick from Attack of the show licking the HDD?
@liquidsoapdispenser:
I'd give it about 2-3 years.
so should i wait for this one or go with the WD Scorpio 320 GB...
@liquidsoapdispenser:
Interesting side note; flash storage capacity growth is fairly on par with traditional technological growth patterns, but when we master 3 dimensional flash storage technics; we would suddenly see the development of drives with hundreds of terabytes and even petabytes of storage in a reasonably short amount of time.
Imagine carrying around a thumb drive with 250TB of storage. Sounds far-fetched, but do you remember when MBs of system storage in a PC was a big deal.
looks nice. how much?
that image is soooo lame! the cut out is weak. that is all
if it is 3mm thicker than a now standard 9mm drive... that is still a formerly-kinda-standard 12mm drive. and likely to fit into more machines than you would guess. though mostly older and larger machines.
But will it last more than 20 spins?
Um....Macbook Pro?? Yes.....? No.....?
you didn't mention that these drives use an extra platter and are thus thicker than standard, IE, they won't fit in any current laptop.
Oh and what the hell is up with the title? 500 gbs for ebooks? Ya I see lots of people using it for that.
@dhaberer:
Already mentioned and I'm pretty sure the title is a joke.
@VISHUSBURN:
if files are measured in petabytes, would they be petafiles?
me wanty!
so so so so bad.
Hey guys, please hire a Photoshop GM. Look at that Paintbrush cut, omg we don't deserve things like this.
@Palestina:
he's just doing crappy chops so we'll appreciate jesus more. hey, where is jesus? im always trying to find him. But then i have to wonder, when i find jesus, what happens next? is it MY turn to hide? it doesn't seem fair, playing a game like that with the son of god. i'm pretty sure he's cheating. it's like when lenny suggested we catch a leprechaun, and carl said, hey what about jesus, and lenny said, yeah that works too, but he's a lot harder to catch. or maybe carl said that. this is what happens when i post before coffee...
@bver100:
What's Engadget?
Unfortunately this drive is 12.5mm tall so won't fit in a MacBook Pro.
Ok, someone's going to ask this question eventually, so it might as well be me. Will it blend?
How much & When? My PS3 needs one urgently.
Hah, my first laptop was a Toshiba with 20mb HDD. I used some proggie to double that to 40mb and thought that was hot shit. Of recent perspective, my Vaio bought in summer 2000 had 9gb Hdd. Now we can have 500x2 quite easily? Damn. Just . . . damn.
Now if someone will just find a way to extend battery life for notebooks out past 3 or 4 hours (because inevitably you'll always end up somewhere you can't plug it in). Perhaps a Nanosolar-coated housing?
@deusdiabolus:
OLED, SSD, smaller chipsets, and better batteries should to it.
@Jason Chen: you mean photochop?
