Although Mossberg's Lenovo X300 vs. MacBook Air fight compared things like weight, portability, inputs and functionality, it didn't compare the thing that power users care about—performance—in absolute numbers. Notebook Review did. In their CPU benchmark, the Air finished the test in 68 seconds while the X300 took an almost double the time at 118 seconds. Things flipped around when they tried another benchmark.
When using the PCMark05 bench, the X300 took the lead once again at 3,467 points, beating the Air, which had 2,478 points. Part of the reason why the Air did worse in the PCMark05 test, which scores based on all the system's components such as the "processor, hard drive, memory and OS." Their Lenovo contained a solid state drive, but their MacBook Air did not, which makes us wonder if the gap would be closer if they re-did the test with a SSD-enabled version. Ok we get it. You love the MacBook Air. Moving on.
Look. Would anybody buy either of these for anything having to do with any kind of performance? No.
They are both cool. Who cares which one is better? The Mac peeps are going to buy the MacBook Air. The PC peeps are going to get the Lenovo X300. This is news?
This shouldn't be news. This is 2008, where is my flying car, rocket boots and silver space suit?
Sluts care. Dirty Sluts care.
hmmm, in your review of the MBA with SSD you wrote that the speed difference was only marginal compared to the HDD version, if I remember correctly. So, that wouldn't be the reason for the better score of the Lenovo.
xps m1330 ftw!
@IUSEAMACSOSUEME: According to Kevin Smith it requires you to take a brick in the mouth to get the flying car.
@yogibimbi:
there was no perceivable difference for any of the tests giz did, but given that the two benchmark tests Notebook Review used gave such different results, it's not unreasonable to suspect that certain tests do "notice" the advantages of the SSD.
Contest?
I smell chicks boxing.
lets test the DVD read and write speed... oh wait crap the air doesnt have a drive builtin .... ok lets test the ethernet throughput... oh crap not that either...
Lenovo is businesses... Air isn't for those 2 reasons alone
@Jason Chen
"Part of the reason why the Air did worse in the PCMark05 test, which scores based on all the system's components such as the 'processor, hard drive, memory and OS.'"
is not a complete sentence!
@pomophobe: You forgot ugly, stupid, and disrespectful.
@binaryfiend:
Said before. Still saying. No ones listning.
@binaryfiend:
Good point. True point. No one person is going to influence a true fan whos on one side or the other back to the oposite side. Not gonna happen.
@pomophobe:
I like sluts.
@ANoel:
I like (some) chicks boxing.
@ANoel: In Jello?
@Xavoc: if it's gonna be jello, I say we skip the boxing and go straight to wrestling.
@Xavoc:
in Apple sauce.
@binaryfiend:
And those that want a laptop with some real power under the hood will buy neither!
@Xavoc: And Kevin Smith is making his fortunes off of the backs of his stoner army.
@Xenocide: Seconded!
@binaryfiend: Second.
Apple is like jesus - it will always say it won no matter what anyone else says.
Come to think of it, Apple is a lot like President Bush too...
@ANoel: Coming soon to a theatre near you... Good Will Hunting 2: Electric Booga, er Hunting Season!
@SchruteBuck: I like the way you think..
I really like Apple, but I think the Macbook air it's just the looks, like a hot blonde super model... I'd never buy an Air...
The comparisons are fine and dandy but, I don't think Lenovo has officially released configuration specs on the X300.

The 10 hour extended battery (I'm assuming taking out the DVD drive and inserting a battery there also) are pretty sweet though.
I'd like to see the final specs when this thing gets released to the public. I'm assuming they're forcing an SSD because of a lack of availibility of higher spec ULV processors (so the performance equals out). ...if only they'd start playing nice with Nvidia and the mobile 8-series GPU's.
For all we know, this could be a beta display model.
Give me a laptop where I can drop in a desktop motherboard, and any components that I want. I would pay tons for that.
I can see it now it would have a 20" screen and weigh 15 pounds. But I could do anything that I wanted with it.
I would only buy either of these laptops if I had just won the lottery. They are not that good. You can find a laptop just as good for half the price, and if you have a problem carrying around a few extra pounds then you really need to hit the gym.
nobody really cares what i'd do. especially not the dog in my icon (that indignant bastard). but honestly, i'd NEVER buy a lenovo cause the buttons by the track pad are just too damn effed up. there's like 20 buttons when all you need is the 2. and i'd NEVER buy the air because my industry (photography) requires you have an optical drive to deliver information to your clients because, let's face it, most people don't know how to transfer data over the web (mention FTP to someone and they just kinda go blank), plus it's still really expensive to move that much data (I'm talking 2 to 3 thousand files roughly 6mb each per job). blah blah blah i only want 2 buttons and an optical drive.
@Inepsa:
Sounds like you just want a desktop
I just noticed the Air says "Boom" at the end. Genius.
Its still a POS that no one should buy...
@wizardofpants:
"(I'm talking 2 to 3 thousand files roughly 6mb each per job)"
lemme guess, you run a web-based prawn shop?
This is just like Top model and gizmodo is Tyra banks.
slightly off topic but the picture with the laptops on the envelopes reminded me. my girlfriend put her laptop in her purse last night and there wasnt even a noticeable bulge (in the purse, though the one in my pants was quite obvious)
@mwalker05:
"......in the purse, though the one in my pants was quite obvious)"
You're retarded.
@mwalker05: You win this round.
I am sitting reading this and typing on my ultra thin and light weight Dell XPS M1330 and feeling great that I have a fast 2.2 ghz Core 2 Duo, a SSD, and 4 gigs of RAM for a lot less than all that would cost in an IBM or Apple Air, oh and did I mention, I am also watching a movie...
@dham84: So you're saying you wouldn't bang the hot, blonde super model....?
I'm confused. :/
@skulyk: Yeah, and I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico.
Giz is allowing Ads in the comments section now? Wow.
(sorry if this sounds so negative, just having a bad day haha)
I was reluctant about the air until I saw/felt it in person. It looks stunning, and feels pretty nice when held. I obviously wouldn't go out and buy one (I get issued a new mac notebook every third year) but from a casual student's standpoint, its perfect. Apps open in a snap (safari is up and running before the icon completes it's first "bounce" on the dock)
the 3 finger rotate is bullshit though. I tried it for 10 minutes and failed. I'm not even an ambiturner, when I can rotate (about 1 in every 12 attempts), I can only do it counter-clockwise
@Jesus Christ:
I think buddy christ would have been more appropriate for this thread
ive never heard of the levono what the heck is it
Well i know nothing of the Lenovo but from what i've herd almost anything has to be better then the Air...
@Jesus Christ: Yes, because he'd rather bang someone he loves, not some slutty model. Apparently, you have no moral values.
Now we have the Judas Air?
@nutbastard:
it is SO a complete sentence.
read it again idiot. he says it scores (meaning gets the score) from all the system components, then lists said components. complete.
"68 seconds" for the mac but "118" for the lenvo. Subliminal propaganda. Everybody has a bias I guess.
um,,, @ Rob C, it's kind of not a complete sentence.
@lpxxfaintxx: i believe JC loves all the slutty models he bangs. loving a slut doesn't make you amoral, just a hopeless romantic.
@pocketcowboy:
a hopeless romantic with VD...
@TonyTriple: in summary, choosing the MBA over the lenovo means you're a hopeless romanic with VD.
The MBA looks awesome... let's admit it.
The Len has better specs.... let's admit it too
however there are people who would buy a BMW-X5 and some others a Toyota landcruiser! Now whats wrong with that.
Some has serious work considerations and purchases are based on pure specs and the others just want the "cool" looks
From what I've read not only here - but other reviews - MBA seems to be winning
having said that we still don't know if Obama or Hillary will cross the finish line first... do we ??
Isn't there a new gadget in the world that we have to keep talking about the mac book air? (without caps, flame on, fanboys)
Oh ..... Wait .....
Isn't apple one of the sponsors of the site????
Lenovo X300 is faster than the Macbook Air,
Winner: Macbook Air.
When it comes to grossly overpriced status-notebooks with little actual performance prowess, I say removable battery FTW!
@ANoel: nah, photography. no prawn. all class, no crass. Bitches. heh.
