Okay, the flashlight machine gun was alarming enough, but now there's also the Pentagon Porcupine weaponized flashlight. A kind of all-in-one gadget for the frightened, it can help you find your car keys if you drop them in the dark, and/or blind and wound an attacker. Or victim, for that matter.
The eye-dazzling power comes from a 70 lumen xenon bulb, which is powerful even while it's no maxablaster, while the spiky bezel is sharpened "more than ordinary crenellated bezels" for slashing and stabbing action. The spikes are retractable, so you can safely slip this into a pocket, we guess. In olive drab, for that extra "military" chic, the 4.8 oz 5-inch flashlight will give 60 minutes of continuous light from its batteries.
I've got no idea who'd carry this creepy thing around: I guess you'd have to be pretty scared indeed if something like this in your bag made you feel safer. But, if you're really into personal protection, it's available for $129. [Pentagonlight via Wired gadgets]

I would'nt mind adding this to my defensive arsenal (a lady can't be too careful) but I would prefer it in bright yellow so I can find it in my purse or glovebox. Add a tazer and a screamer alarm and I am sold.
nice light.
It's a effective device to have that wouldn't to as much damage as a gun..
at its most basic..its a flashlight.
Anything can be used as a weapon..even your car keys.
It doesn't look very handy to me. Frankly, I think that taping some LED flashlight to a bottle of mace might be more effective against attackers.
for 129? i pass
I would prefer spikes. At least 3 inches in length. Stabbing an attacker is much better than slashing at him with that awkward ring blade. I really wish I had this when I got mugged, so I could been a scared sissy and give the mugger my 15 bucks AND sheepishly hand him my $130 flashlight.
they need to put this flashlight on that folding gun. then it would be the ultimate dog-walking killing machine.

You're missing the point. This is the perfect gift for your girlfriend/wife/significant other to show them you care.
Surefire has been selling these kind of lights for years.

I have a Surefire brand flashlight that practically looks identical except the spiky bezel is always out instead of retractable. Those things can withstand a lot! Worth the money if you do stage work. It won't break if you're on a catwalk and you drop it over the edge.
@shoeless:
Damn, you beat me to it. :-P
I love my surefire more than I could love any other flashlight.
I prefer SureFire's version that has been around for years:

Why not just use the magnesium fire starter blocks instead? Scrape a few pcs of mag from the block along the way, light with striker bar and WHA LA! Instant light and 2500 degree flames, enough to discourage any attacker.
"alarming"??
Potentially defending oneself or those that can't defend oneself is alarming?
why not just crap your pants? the smell would drive any attacker away... That's what I plan on doing.
@feckineejit:
lol
We thought the D cell MagLite was weaponized enough. Just whack your attacker with it.
If it has rechargeable batteries it is perfect for the security field. Worked grave yard security for a long time and I always had my 3 cell mag lite and a pocket knife... this just combines the two...
I have seen the light.....and doesn't include buying this.
just thought i'd add another plug for surefire...you just can't lose with them. and the ridges on surefire lights aren't sharp they are simply meant to attack pressure points effectively.
Don't stab me bro!
Any flashlight with a "strike bezel" has this, and "tactical" flashlight have been including them for years, to make your flashlight more effective as a last ditch club. Making it retractable is stupid, because by the time you realize that you might need to use your flashlight to apply the beatdown, the beatdown is probably upon you. You're not going to have time to make adjustments to your flashlight.
'Dude, can you get that fecking light OUT of my eye, please!'
Another happy Surefire user here. Just a word of warning though; The Surefire Defender does not help you keep your shit from getting stolen if you're passed out on the streets of Munich from too much to drink at Oktoberfest.
FThorn: They can't help it. Read some of the politicized articles here and understand that the editors are the product of their environments. Remember the 300 MPH "Deadly projectiles" from the glorified and underpowered BB gun last week.
Triborough: The point is that with this, and many other brands of similar lights you can have them on you all the time. Most violent attacks occur in reduced light, generally this means at night, but any time you are indoors, you are essentially in a reduced light environment. This format of light is actually several times brighter, lighter, and easier to carry than the Maglite format of light.
As for the crenellations, they are there primarily for what is called "pain compliance". The application of the light, a kubuton, or other devices to certain areas of the body generate a near blinding level of non-permanently damaging pain that results in compliance to cease hostilities, and a generally more "Pliable" demeanor until the authorities arrive [unless you are one].
You'd probably break the bulb if you used it to stab someone. Better not to have one of these things and avoid "dangerous situations" or run (never look back because you'll trip up).
Nice.
"Bye honey."
Some of us would rather have the chance of giving them the time to get out of the trouble first.
Cool. It's almost as good as the laser-guided knife. Although after stabbing someone with this, it can produce a nice red-light, Halloween-Mike-Myers-style effect.
It needs to have a pin that you can pull out and you toss the light at the attacker and the light frags them into cubed steak. That would be a good self defense item.
meh, it would be easier and more effective to fit a longer shiv in the butt of the light...
Ya know,... I may be a lil old fashions, but... What happnd 2 beating the sht outta someone with a mag-lite? Both less expensive and more satisfying.
Just sayin>.>
