Honda's new GPS warns drivers when they're about to leave their car in places where it is likely to be stolen, broken into or otherwise vandalized. The new technology, available from today if you live in Japan, links to local police stations and provides crime ratings by location, and if area is particularly dangerous it issues an alert. No indication of when or if this'll come to the US. [Left Lane News via Inventor Spot ]

hahaz ive always suggested this to my friends about having a button to reroute away from/around a ghetto.....or for picking a restaurant out of a high crime area.
In a soft female voice it would say "lock the doors! Are you crazy? Get out of here!"
If it came to the U.S., some group would complain about how they are being targeted as a crime area.
I wonder how this thing will re-route me around Memphis. Or does Memphis just show up a huge skull and cross bones
Of course, there is nothing stopping people from using it in reverse. "No, No not here, all the good cars are taken."
I wonder how this thing would re-route me around Memphis, or would Memphis just be a huge skull and cross bones?
Hrmm
It goes "You vehicle will now proceed in locking all doors, DANGER; you are heading towards the hood"
@Skorpius: That's funny, and would probably be proven true. There would be a class action lawsuit against "categorizing".
But will it help me find the best bud, I mean shortest way through traffic... yeah thats it.
In the US there would be two settings, 1) You are in the US, a high crime area, 2) you are in New York City, self destruct sequence commencing...
No one would break into your car if you had it equipped with The Denver Jockstrap.
@GOLD5: Well then I'll have to go with the second setting, guess I'm shit out of luck.
To quote a crappy Pauly Shore movie (The Bogus Witch Project), "Bank? What the fuck is a bank doing here? There are no banks in the ghetto!"
That would probably be my alert signal from Honda's GPS.

Hey. Waitaminute.
(channeling chris rock) that'll be the last time you see a honda on martin luther king blvd...
The GPS is linked to the engine and will disable the car if it gets within 1 mile of Detroit, Newark, or the Anacostia section of Washington DC
Your present location is: Jome
Warning, you are in a high crime area.
Joke riuned by typo
+ Watch video
Somebody already thought this up.....
"You're entering a 'working class' neighborhood."
In the US, the cars would all guide everyone to Iowa directly. It would be like a "Field of Dreams" of Accords and Civics.
"this is where you can get some herb"
target acquired!!!!!!
Unless it can wave robot arms and say "Danger, Will Robinson", I don't want...
"You are entering San Francisco... initiating homeless scan... initiating voice activated windshield pepper spray.... just say 'when'"
@keyser:
And Swisha Sweets...
Seriously, could you imagine the GPS telling you: "Not here, son. It's GTA up in this mutha!"
When cars with this feature come to the US, they will immediately jump to the top of the car thieves "most wanted" list. I'm not sure I see the point of this. You've got to go where you've got to go.
Sounds like it could be available as downloadable content on the Dash Express. :Þ
Imagine if you lived in one of those neighborhoods...
Car: "Danger! You are entering an area with a high crime rate. Proceed with caution."
Driver: "Thanks car! As if it's not depressing enough coming home to my shitty house..."
So that thing will go crazy in Roppongi.
sounds cool but does japan have high crime? from what i can find, there are more car thefts in the top five cities in the us than there are in all of japan. if you double japan's rate to roughly account for population difference they still blow us out of the water.
they should add a lightning strike warning to the car too cause that seems as likely.
@GadgetPlay: I think the point is that nav systems guide drivers blindly into shady neighborhoods, where as you or I might tell someone to go a longer way to avoid an especially rough area.
i guess the hookers and drug dealers on the side of the street isnt enough warning.
@drewdraws2: FINALLY an intelligent comment to this kind of system. i can't remember how many times my GPS sent me through Newark for an hour because it felt it was the best route...and it ended up being the longest anyway. systems like these are what i'd consider adaptive navigation. i mean, what good is the best route if it's sending me to get the car jacked on the way? this is right along the same line as traffic update navigation.
also @ the new york comment - you obviously haven't been around nyc much, have you? don't make your car a target, and it won't get stolen. and for crying out loud put in a decent security system if you're gonna put in a $500+ in-dash GPS unit D:
The Griswalds could've used this on the family truckster!
"The New Honda KLN. Protecting your white ass from the ghetto."
I'm sorry, it's just the first though on my mind was how horribly racist this car could turn out...

Hey, the first time you are in a situation tha this could avoid, you bet your ass you will see the value in it. How much money is YOUR life worth? The rich liberals that would be against this will NEVER find themselves in that situation because they have drivers/lifestyles that naturally lend themselves to never being in such a predicament. Think about it.
