Our friend Datamancer, steampunk modder extraordinaire, is at it again. His newest creation is this Steampunk LCD monitor, and it's a doozy.
This is a 22" widescreen LCD that I built to compliment my brass keyboards. The frame is solid 1/4-inch brass that has been sanded and polished to a high shine. The base features a mixture of brass and black marble with a small brass "cord catch" to keep the power and data cords tidy.The monitor was made for an upcoming movie, and after filming is complete he's gonna toss it up on eBay. Even better? He plans to design and create a mouse to complete the set. I can see people lining up to get a matching monitor/keyboard/mouse combo of this quality. We'll, of course, keep you updated. iuno... i think i need to smell its ****...
@thomusvoo: I wanna smell yo dick
I am not buying anything with the word "PUNK" in it. You betta represent fool!!
I can't think of anything witty to say. Damn you all.
As long as its one of those new samsungs I really don't care what it looks like.
pity it's running ugly ugly windows, i'd like to see one of these mods running a custom theme (for whatever OS, i don't care) that would match the look and feel of the device itself
*Looks down at watch, impatiently waiting for Steampunk to go out of style*
I think that's the Model M mod, as well. Fantastic keyboard, mod or not. I'm using one right now.
@TheManator: so far that hasnt really stopped that many people...
@michaelportent: You're not the only one.
you mean look down at your POCKETwatch!
I acutally dont really like it, it doesnt look "real"....more like a keyboard with metal and the keys replaced, and a monitor with a new bezel. It needs more bulk, wires, etc maybe some steam...
I cant wait for this fad to lose ITS steam. Its really making me steaming mad. It puts me in a steamfunk. Anyone see Piston/Philly game 1? I bet the Piston fans said their team stunk.
Now I will stop.
i like the monitor.. but that windows.. damn.. it's pretty antique... looks like win 2000 :D
I actually really like steampunk stuff, usually. I like more of the "tech hidden within old tech" , like the scanner modded inside a large leatherbound book. don't hate me cuz I'm copper.
@michaelportent: You and me both...and seems every single piece of 'steampunk' tech gets covered here.
Hell, screw that monitor. The keyboard looks really cool kinda like a typewriter! Probably costs an arm and a leg though.
@turbofreak: The keyboard project was covered here last year: [gizmodo.com]
For true steampunk style, it should be running Windows 3.1.
Sometimes it seems that
those who comment only seek
self aggrandizement.
@oldmanstan: My thoughts exactly. You go through all the trouble to retro your computer and you run a stock-ass version of Windoze? Kind of anti-climactic and quite lame.
@SpeedyGonzalas: Haiku dissing. I like it.
I actually like it! "Let off some steampunk, Bennett."
Am I the only one who is sick of the steampunk? not:steampunk
Same goes for LEGOs.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy both. But, if you think it's innovative, (which should be gizmodo's primary focus, innovative) SHEESH. Will someone put my drunk ass to bed?
@michaelportent: niiice!
Commenting about the OS a MONITOR is running?? Really?? Are you a bunch of f*cking idiots.
I remember when Gizmodo comments were insightful, provoking and often amusing. Now it's just a contest for 12 year-olds to see who can say the dumbest shit.
@slipperyskip:
Well said, sir.
Indeed.
Be ashamed people, as I am ashamed for you.
@slipperyskip: Thats it. You've made my blog today. After detention. [Other random middle-school euphemism]. [Something else that says i'm in the age bracket you mentioned]. [One more of these random brackets to completely kill any possibility of this joke being funny].
When will this crap end?
@mikesfree: When you steampunk haters are no longer a disproportionately vocal minority!
Indeed... when WILL this crap end? Every time I see this stuff, it all looks exactly the same. *sigh*
@ObtuseGoose: Kinda like all the "gundam" and other various giant robot things they keep posting? Just 'cause I don't like it doesn't mean nobody does. Geez you people are egocentric. If you're not interested, just don't look. It's not hard.
@ObtuseGoose: Yea, but ironically "the same" is "the same super-badassitude"
Game. Set. Match.
;)
I swear to you if I hear the word "steampunk" one more time I am going to seriously put the uptown hurt on some fool.
That is some hotness! What a beautiful contrast to the sterile, rounded-edge computer design that's become such a cliche these days.
First, I have no idea what the steampunk appeal is, but it's cool stuff. Second, I have no idea what a radical out the box design must incorporate in order to be labeled steampunk. But based on my thousands upon thousands of highly scientific and thorough observations, I can hot glue a bunch of loose screws and piece of scrap from my old motorcycle to just about anything and call it steampunk, right?
You might not like the execution (steampunk), but if you don't like it, you've got to respect the quality of the work.
@WildWon: Oops pow surprise!
@GoatMonkey: Steampunk. Nope, no hurtin' here. As far as steampunk projects go, Datamancer's are some of the best. There's no hot gluing screws and shit to stuff and calling it steampunk.
@Uberdude328i: No, you're thinking of the current PC modding scene.
This is kind of beautiful and cool, in an anachronistic mash up of old design and new technology kind of way, aside from the whole steam punk thing. If they just didn't call it "steam punk" maybe more people would like it?
Well I think it's neat! I've liked the steampunk style since Arcanum. I wish I had such talent myself..
Im not quite sure, but I kinda get the feeling that this mod is a little bit cooler than my really awesome "drunken sigaretteburns" tunejob on my old keyboard
They need to "punk" the background of the computer.
The reason I like "Steampunk" is that it parenthetically frames the opposing robo/
human irony of most of our gizmos: the framing makes the picture.
Pretty much whatever technology you can buy is out-of-date.
And all that "so ten minutes ago" stuff is increasingly fabricated, the parts assembled, and tested and packaged robotically.
Enter "Steampunking" to create by hand an enduring (read: not plastic) "reliquary" for what is so temporal and soon-to-be, worthless.
I doubt many Steampunked pieces will be sent to China as toxic landfill.
Plus it looks cool.
@Steampunk haters: I have the cure for you. All you have to do is *NOT CLICK ON STEAMPUNK STORIES*. Seriously, it's the internet, there's plenty of non-steampunk stuff out there to look at. Try fleshbot
@kahri: Or you could just allow us to make our comments and not tell us not to voice our discontent of the stories being run.
@Gofastmazda: oh, the irony.
If I was Donald Trump or Snoop Dogg I'd have to have one of these! I will not be outbid on Ebay!
This the sort of thing i need to complete my secret underground layer!
Datamancer is my hero!
