Lenovo Parodies MacBook Air Ad For X300

Most parody videos are lame in the sense that they take one joke and stretch it to 60 seconds, but Lenovo's one joke actually works when properly executed. Not to spoil anything, but it's a send-up of the MacBook Air in favor of Lenovo's own X300. According to Fake Steve, it's been sent around to component suppliers and contract manufacturers in China, no doubt eliciting much har hars as they forward it on to their friends. Heheh, go gettem.

  • That just about sums it all up

Kudos to whoever made that video (I would say its not actually official Lenovo no, otherwise they'd be up for some serious lawsuit-age)

  • Hrm.. can it play Crysis?

  • Pwnd. Seriously if you are gung ho about getting Apple just get a Macbook. The Air is a waste of a laptop.

  • @daftrok: I think people who get the Air do it more for status.

  • this would be more effective if they didn't pull out that ugly POS at the end that looks exactly like the shitty thinkpad i had in 1998.

  • @Vindicoth: You are so retarded it defies description.

  • This is GREAT!!

I like some apple hardware such as the ipod - which I think is GREAT but this airbook is an air ball.

If the air had VGA or DVI out, an Ethernet jack and a build in DVD player it would be a sweet laptop - until then the x300 and the Sony alternative are pretty nice

  • This video pretty much silences anyone trying to make sense of Apple's hot air: It is nothing more than an effort to sell based on flash rather than substance. That thing is almost like the Moto RAZR for laptops.

  • That is one ugly ass laptop...

Air = best design I've ever seen for a laptop

  • The idea of the parody is good. However I think the X300 is a bit uglier than I expected. Hopefully its just the video quality or something, since I was seriously considering getting one.

  • Very funny. I agree a little with pferde_schwanz. What's interesting about the punchline is that they don't actually show the USB ports. They assume you know. That and other things could have been highlighted. It's more of an anti-Air than a pro-X300.

  • LOL BURNED APPLE!

  • Oh btw, I can't wait for Carmen to see this.

  • This ad is GREAT! It really characterizes how by being a "jack-of-all-trades" computer you become a boring box, and how the MacBook Air is such a simple solution. Try to please everyone and nobody will ever be passionate about your product. Honestly, are there any Lenovo-heads out there like there are Mac-heads? Apple hit it right on the nose by offering premium power/connectivity (MacBook Pros), great price/performance (MacBooks) and supreme portability with the MacBook Air. It's funny how those that don't "get-it" are the first to "knock-it"

  • @takashimike: ME TOO! I'm waitin' for the other tiddy to pop-out.

  • Now please anyone explain to me what all the usb wires and hubs are for? I can only make out a external optical drive which you use for, say, once a year. And plugging in the Micro-DVI to DVI adapter to make it looks messier is just an insult to people's intelligence, well, perhaps excluding apple haters'.

  • Hahahahahaha.

Ah. That's probably the best Mac parody I've seen in a while.

  • what all were they plugging into that USB hub?

It looked like a DVD-ROM, an SD reader and an IR interface? and something else... any guesses?

  • 1) Ugly
    2) Thick
    3) Windows

There's three compromises on your "No compromise" ultra-portable laptop, Lenovo.

  • Why didn't they go ahead and plug a floppy drive and a zip drive in too. You know, to really prove their point. Or would that be proving Apple's point?

  • I don't get it. What did they add to create that mess of cables? CD drive, ethernet, what else? Who even uses ethernet on a laptop anyway?

  • Can I have my 1:17 back?

  • that was pretty funny. I would have stopped it before the lenovo's introduced, but still funny.

  • They should've atleast pulled out packing tape for the apple envelope.

  • @Tayng:

not the status, but being able to use a laptop that is thin, light, and easy to carry around (around the house one handed, out and about with you), so so pleasing that it is worth it to some.

It is like taking a bath in champagne.

  • That's a great video. I'll take substance over style in any object. But I think that the black thinkpad with the red nipple is a great look.

  • Oh YES! Our favorite topic (MBA vs. X300) from yesteryear! Well, a couple months ago, at least.

BTW, I'd really like to see them plug in 5 USB peripherals into the X300 -- which only has 3 USB ports -- without using a USB hub ;-)

Oh, and I wonder how well the X300 is selling? The MBA has been in the No. 1 slot of the Apple Store's Top Sellers list pretty much ever since it was released 3 months ago.

  • @Radicalevan: I'm using Ethernet with my laptop right now. It's on my desk, at work, and gigabit Ethernet is a LOT faster than any wireless standard out there.

  • @Dearhaw: Since it already has a built in optical drive, built in Ethernet, a large enough hard drive to not require external large volume storage, and video output, it doesn't need to have as many USB ports as the Air otherwise would to equal it in features.

  • Of course, the external optical drive doesn't work in a hub...

  • Giz just can't let a good flame war encouraging post go to waste.

  • The funniest part is watching all the fanboys get into a tizzy.

  • Another Mac parody:

    Opera Mini - iPhone

  • The tangle of wires was ridiculous. The same thing could have been done without half of that mess. But seriously, who doesn't use a DVD drive? Hello, movies? Yes, I have movies backed up that I transfer over to my laptop. But that solution has serious limitations. It means that I had to take the time prior to my trip to conduct the transfer, and that I have storage space available for movies. DVD's, for all the talk of an end of physical media, are still remarkably versatile. They take moments to load, are available at your local blockbuster, and don't add too much to your backpack size. Also, I still load most of my purchased software via DVD. Yes, freeware and patches are loaded via the net, but CS3, Office, OS's, these all require a DVD drive (in my non-cutting edge world). The lack of a DVD drive is a serious limitation for me, sorry Air.

  • *buys macbook air with his tax return*

  • @ferrdidly: Yes, looks are so much more important than function, capability, usability. Well, with Apple ownership anyway. (I've always thought it's true and regularly people seem to prove it.)

@Dearhaw: *If* sales numbers were an indication of quality......well, Apple computers would be far down the quality table you absolute muppet. And Dame Barbara Cartland would be the greatest writer in history, after that fictional character god, of course. But I digress......

@bobdobbs: Of course the x300 is "thick" (a term now used to mean "anything not as thin as the Air"). It actually contains things, that's why.

While the irony of them purchasing an Air to make fun of it is amusing, I can't help but chuckle over the sheer gall of it all.

This parody, however, is proof positive that Apple's marketing is extremely successful, since it's not even the gaudiest, nor the most pretentious, yet still manages to get people to both love them dearly and hate them and make endless parodies of them.

  • God that thing's ugly! and look how it only just s..q..u...e..e.z...e..s into the envelope (looks like they can't even close it!
Yeah the airbook is flawed, but you wait for airbook 2 - that will be superb for sure!

  • I think Air is Iphone 2.0!

  • Image of Kaiser-Machead Kaiser-Machead at 02:44 PM on 04/29/08 *

    @i64X: The X300 comes with a 64GB SSD.

  • this was an entertaining commercial, but honestly, the only thing that made my vomit jump a little was the fact that it looks like the same ol 1990s think pad. i mean, how hard is it to tweek it for today's market? If one of apple's main selling points is being pretty, you'd think they'd at least challenge it a TAD. Not just eat a bunch of usb ports and a cd-rom drive and shit out a literal brick. REDESIGN, SUCKAS! Hire me, I'll do it. Shoot.

  • If an an Air Book fell of the back of a truck, maybe I'd consider using it otherwise...nah!

  • @rfaulder: Way to go buddy! I was actually feeling guilty for not stimulating the economy by using my check to pay off my student loans, not buying shit. Glad you're taking care of that for me. I'm also pleased because you chose an American company to stimulate. Though, ideally it would be nice to invest in a company that's based in AND manufacturers in the US, but that may be asking a bit too much (you're probably not in the market for steel folding chairs or a tractor). Anyhow, GW and millions of Americans say "Thank you".

  • It is funny how the bulk of comments against the X300 are about how ugly it is. Maybe it's just me but I don't particularly care how my laptop looks. Function, people, function. And yes...I manage to walk around with my Latitude D830 with only one hand and somehow manage to not cry about it. And like i64x said, some of you might be surprised to find how frequently a laptop gets plugged into a wired network.

As to Dearhaw and his/her point as to how well the MBA is selling in the Apple Store as compared to the X300. Gee...you're right. I'll bet not many X300s get sold at the Apple Store at all! But then I ask you this...how many MBAs are selling on Lenovo's site? Let's all go take a look, shall we?

  • @Tayng: VERY TURE

  • Those idiots hold the superdrive upsidedown. I LOVE APPLE.

  • @boe: The Air has mini DVI out and comes with the (tiny) cables to go to full sized DVI, or VGA. I think this is a fair compromise to having the large port directly on the machine taking up space and not using it 99% of the time, since you need to make design concessions to that large port.

The optical drive in the x300 is an impressive technical feat, but as that video demonstrates, that laptop is still a lot larger than the Air.

The rest of those USB cables were just kind of dumb. If you need all that stuff, you're not on the go anyways, or you have the wrong laptop.

  • I'm an Apple Fanboy and I thought that was HILARIOUS. Great marketing...

  • Do you think that Lenovo ever stops to think that maybe they're just re-doing the same thing with the X300 and the Air is the future?

SERIOUS QUESTION: How long will it be before we are no longer using cords, CD's, etc...?

Bluetooth and wireless USB make cords obsolete, and a solid state card or USB drive can hold more than a CD, DVD, or even Blu-Ray disk (yes, I know a 50 GB thumb drive is REALLY expensive compared to a Blu-Ray disk, but it won't always be).

  • I don't understand why would anyone plug so many things on to a laptop, also i can't remember the last time & personally used a optical drive. People have to understand that LED backlit screens are not cheap the MBA must be the cheapest machine that has one. If your aldeady a mac user the only thing you might miss is a ethernet port the rest is just in the way, they do everything wirelessly already

  • @chonnes: Dude I know plenty of insanely dedicated Thinkpad fanatics (especially about those freaking red rubber nipples).

  • @Tayng: Some of us just want an ultraportable that doesn't force us to use Windows.

  • @i64X:
You call 64GB a large HD? Are you serious?

    And don't forget that x300 is 1.2GHz C2D versus 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz C2D for the Air.

  • Ya know, I'm slightly frustrated with all the "Ewww, it's ugly! Not like my Air!" talk. Is it me, or do people not realize the taste is absolutely relative. While I do like how the Air and other Apple products (iPhone) look, brushed aluminum is not the be all, end all of materials. Personally, I have my iPhone wrapped in a black plastic rigid cover (very thinkpad'esque) because the thought of scratching that bare aluminum case gives me fits. If I owned an Air, I would feel the same. I'd be forever paranoid that I was going to scratch that beautiful surface. Rubberized black plastic does have it's advantages after all. Also, I don't know if I like Silver, as Subjective as that is. Do you honestly expect us to accept "I feel the thinkpad is ugly" as a mature argument?

  • @poisonfist: I believe the Thinkpad is also soon to be coming out with a much larger HDD. Though, still not exactly a "race horse",as you elude to.

  • Image of Kaiser-Machead Kaiser-Machead at 02:58 PM on 04/29/08 *

@MadCrazy: If a Macbook Air fell off the back of a truck and into my possession, I'd sell it and buy myself an MBP instead. Wootsauce.

  • Isnt the air higher spec tho? either way. Both portables have there own market. depending on what people need they will buy accordingly!

  • This vid makes fun of both the Air and the X300. It's pretty anticlimactic when they pull that fugly thing out after having shown the Air.

  • Also, people forget, the macbook air is like the newton, or the 20th century mac. both products put apple way ahead of its competitors, but failed at the time. then bang slimline iMac, iPhone, success.
