After it died, CompUSA was bought by Tigerdirect, and here are some of the first pictures of the freshly awakened PC retailer. Even better, the zombified store is reported by reader Martin B. to be better than its pre-undead version:
It's a much better store than it used to be, full of components, motherboards, and lots of actually _helpful_ people who know computers.

Well, realistically its not like they could have gotten worse so there was really only one direction they could go.
Sorry, I don't live in the US, but CompUSA is (was) dead?
I thought I saw an in-game ad of it in Burnout Paradise?
Anyone know if the one in midtown is still there? Aw screw it, I'll check it out this weekend.
Glad to see they are back, it looks pretty good in the pictures.
Too bad Comp USA killed Good Guys first. Sure, they may be better now, but I miss Good Guys.
Aha. So they're... not... dead... yet.

Thank GOD! I've been looking everywhere for a $30 USB cable...
What really killed CompUSA was a bunch of dickheads they had just walking around not helping anyone, Well at least that's how it was in 3 stores in my area, Best Buy is on the same track, No management at all, it's like everyone gets paid just to show up at the store and do nothing
@snitch29: I have a similiar situation. In the home state of Best Buy's the employee's are a dime-a-dozen it seems. I actually get a kick about toying with the idiot's in the electronics section.
Sounds worth checking out, then. I wonder if they use the same stock as the site; that way it'd be feasible that they carry or could carry some of the stuff from the site. That'd be pretty nifty.
In my town, CompUSA was the only place to find a variety of components and computers. I am now left with Sears and RadioShack.
Tiger Direct should just have named it after themselves.
I'd definitely be their regular customer if they name it Tiger Direct
so, does this mean prices wont be ridiculously high?
If that's the one in Fort Lauderdale I was there last week. It was run ever worse the before. Nobody knew what the hell was going on, they had the alarm on the laptops going off and nobody could track down the single laptop that still had XP. Stay away, STAY AWAY STAY AWAY!
I've been using Tiger Direct online for years, and I've gone to the Clearwater, FL store a few times now. It's great to just get parts I need without a huge markup. I was able to get a new IDE laptop HD and some older-style RAM for an upgrade. Identical prices in store as it was on-line.
I'm actually quite thrilled. I have been wondering if the pricing is similar or the same as the Tiger Direct website. If they are I'll be in heaven. One of the reopened stores is right next to my school.
Much better then trying to get anything related to computers from the Best Buy or Circuit City down the way.
I have been to of the new CompUSA stores here in Jax, Fl once every week or 2. I was able to talk them into getting some equipment shipped to the store to save on shipping.
They carry a lot of the Tigerdirect stuff (lots of components), but not everything of course. There are a lot of refurbs and plain box items for sale as well. Newegg is cheaper, but CompUSA is 5 minutes away.
They are still remodeling the store. Today they had one of the shelving units pulled out and I could see years worth of price slips that had fallen under there. Everyone of which was overpriced.
@Norcross: I've been in the same store in Clw a few times myself since it re-opened, and I have to say a huge improvement. And I keep drooling over the 73" Mitsubishi DLP they advertise...
like literally a month after the comp usa near me closed down staples moved into its spot. i'm kinda annoyed about that because now, if they ever come back, they will probably be substantially farther away than they were. i dont put PCs together, but i still love comp usa and would love a store near me in which i could check out the latest components.
I bought my Macintosh Performa 575 from one of the CompUSA's in Manhattan back in 1993 for about $2999. While it was the family's first computer, I still cannot believe we ever paid that much for a computer. But it paid for itself, as I used it for over 10 years until buying a new one. And it didn't even know what an mp3 was!
bullplop, the compusa here closed for a day and then it reopened right away under tiger direct. and those new employees are even more clueless than the last ones. and now they don't sell apple, or sony, or any decent looking tv's like they used to. and they have piles of boxes everywhere, new management sucks
I feel sorry for people without a Fry's nearby. Atrocious customer service. Unbeatable selection.
Don't forget they charge UPS shipping even though you picked it up in the god damn store.
Ahhh, makes me appreciate Fry's even more...don't have to worry about Tiger Direct or Comp USA...
@markarian: word. i love Fry's.
There's one near my house in Guaynabo, PR and I have to tell you that the prices are great. I can only imagine they're better in the mainland as we get those "island" markups and always pay more for everything.
I got a Jabra BT5010 headset for $20, they have reasonably priced Corsair ram, decently priced video cards, motherboards... For me it's the only place nearby I can get decent components so I hope it never goes away!
We have nothing nearby here but an insanely priced and rebate-happy Office Depot, though they are making noise of bringing Best Buy to our town in the next few years. They closed the CompUSA in the Palisades Mall (the nearest one to me) and with the exception of a temporary Halloween store, nothing has gone in the old shell of a store.
Mmm, I looked forward to the Friday newspaper ads for Fry's back when I assembled my own systems and was always on the lookout for the best components I could find on sale. If this new Tiger Direct owned CompUSA comes here to Los Angeles, I might swing by to take a look, but I can't see them beating Fry's.
Being a physical store, it is still doomed for failure in todays tech market. It will always be cheaper to order computer/tech products online and have them delivered that to purchase them in the store. Sales people are expensive and are built into the inflated price of the products. CompUSA will die again...soon.
I used to work at my local CompUSA (only one in SC) and left about a month before they announced the closures. I doubt highly that that store will be zombie-brought-back-to-life-ified.
I really hope they bring these back to more locations. I live in connecticut and would love to have a ZombUSA here!
Well we are really in need of a true PC hobbyest store (ala Fry's) out here in the northeast, so I'm hoping CompUSA does well and meets expectations.
CompuUSA needs to be more like Micro Center and less like Best Buy and Circuit City. Hopefully with Tiger Direct in charge, they'll make that the new direction.
The closing of the Greenville, SC CompUSA left one million people without an Apple retailer. Luckily, we will be getting an Apple Store in our Best Buy in just a few weeks.
Fry's: Where you go when you know you want someone else's returned-as-DOA crap.
Frankly, if every brick-and-mortar computer store closed today, I wouldn't notice. Between Newegg and Geeks.com I can't remember the last time I had to go to Fry's to be insulted by the Door Nazis.
@Kaiser-Machead: You're out of luck. New locations:
So its like the old Compusa before the CEO's raped and pillaged the company and rode off laughing at the investors.
All three of the CompUSA stores near where I live (Redmond WA) shut down in the first round of store closings last year, and all three have sat empty since then. Of those, two are basically right next to Best Buy stores, and the third is in an old shopping center that has been circling the proverbial drain for years, and the space is probably going to end up getting redeveloped out of existence anyway. It would be nice to have someone to actually compete with Fry's on price and selection though; Best Buy and Circuit City never have what I'm looking for, and Fry's is usually too expensive.
