Smartphone blog TamsPPC say they received an email from Palm regarding developer submissions for two devices codenamed Zeppelin and Skywriter.They suggest the Skywriter could be a Palm 500-style device with WinMo 6.1, and they posted possible mockup of what appears to be a dev unit. There were no facts provided about the Zeppelin, but TamsPPC included a copy of the email they received and think the phones will hit the market in Q3 2008. Hmmmm... [TamsPPC]

Gah! That's an ugly photoshop.
Christ. I know this is just a rough dev unit, but the basic layout dashes any hopes I had that the next Palm units coming out would be revolutionary.
I've had a Treo/Palm Pilot/Handspring since 1999. But this year may be my last as a Palm devotee, because the innovation simply isn't there any more. We're working on an operating system that's remained largely unchanged since the mid-nineties! If that's not cause for desertion, I don't know what is. Plus those BlackBerry 9000 pics looked mighty enticing... if they truly have upgraded their OS, then it's high time I jump ship.
I guess Palm really wants to go out like the Hindenburg when they crash and burn.
Either that or all that hot air will actually manage to get SOMETHING off the ground.
(Oh it's just too easy.)
It's better to burn out than it is to rust Palm, but at at this point you'd need some Naval Jelly just to get loose enough to burn.
Just give it up already.
@strider_mt2k: Palm, I'd like you to meet our friend, Motorola.
Palm is like that guy in war movies you just know is going to die first because they didnt even give him a name.
"They suggest the Skywriter could be a Palm 500-style device with WinMo 6.1"
Wow you guys really jumbled this up.
Here's what the original article states:
"Unconfirmed sighting reports from another Palm insider have confirmed the existence of a "Centrolike" WM device - it could be very well possible that Skywriter is this box. Alternatively, it could also be a WM6.1 version of the Treo 500 - no further information on the devices is currently available…"
@J.T.:
This is a Windows Mobile device, not Palm OS.
@Everyone
This is not what the next Treo is going to look like; it's just a dev unit. And they're not going to put out the real design until just before launch. You guys know better than this. Besides, what could possibly be revolutionary about the mere case of a phone in the first place? The operating system is what sets everything apart. (Unfortunately of course this will be running Windows Mobile; but you get my point.) It's a Treo; it's going to have a keyboard on the front and a square screen. End of story.
If you ask me, Palm Zeppelin will never be the same without Bonzo...
I really hope Palm can put a new product with a new PALM OS (not WinMo) I love Palm OS, simple, tidy, perfect :)
I want a palm pilot the size of a DVD case- the top half is a large general touchscreen area, the bottom half devoted to specialized DIAs. For reference, witness Jake Cisco's PADD from Deep Space Nine.
I like Palm, the software and hardware and simple and neat. It just needs to be a little bigger.
I don't find naming your project after something that is famous for going up in flames to be the brightest idea.
The launch party is scheduled for Lakehurst, NJ. Not a good sign.
Dang! I thought Palm tanked and went of business after the Foleo announcement. They are still selling over-sized devices running the flaky Palm OS?
@OMG! Ponies!: True. Maybe their pathetic stock price will crash like the Hindenburg.
@lecti:
One specific zeppelin -- the Hindenburg -- is known for going up in flames, not all zeppelins everywhere.
