If you've got time and absolutely nothing better to do, you can graba resource explorer and dive into the Zune software. What would you find? Some images of two new Zunes, both with a black back. The current black 80GB and red 8GB Zunes have a silver back, which are also pictured, so these would be new new. It looks like just bad lighting, but the resource item actually says "black back." We don't know whether these are retail colors or just limited edition Zunes for employees, but we'll probably find out soon. [Zunited News Center]

Apple innovation: new devices with larger drives
Microsoft innovation: new colors
And they wonder why they are not selling as many as Apple.
jesus why do they keep doing the color thing... assuming this is real... they aren't exactly lending legitimacy to their product by releasing new colors every 5 minutes.
zune fetish today? like I understand when you have apple ones.. but zune?? *shakes head*
Let's use wi-fi to rocket sweet tracks up other's Zune slots...
Thanks,
Jason Chen
Lots of Zune coverage in the last week.
I wonder what MS has in store for us this November when the Zune Gen 3 appears.
@scoobydoo: 30 -> 80. That's bigger.
And I fail to see how Toshiba developing larger hard drives is an apple innovation.
Talk about unexciting colors. I just have the regular Black front, silver back zune, but if they had better colors I would have gotten something different.
The only colors they have right now for the new zunes are Red, pink and black. As far as i know anyway. I would have liked a blue zune. oh well.
Just awesome. No wonder MS was profitable with their entertainment division. This kind of cutting edge innovation on the Zune is just awesome. How do they come up with these ideas???? It's mind-boggling.
@scoobydoo:
Haha what? How is apple innovating there? new iPods with larger HDDs. wow thats real innovation huh? If anything I think Microsoft has innovated more in the mp3 player market since the introduction of the zune than apple has.
Are you guys serious? I love how when Microsoft announces new colors all the comments are "Wow this is dumb all they can do is put out new colors" or "and they wonder why theyre losing!" and of course other sarcasm filled comments.
Jesus christ people. It's not supposed to be some new cutting edge and innovative crap. ITS NEW COLORS AND NOTHING MORE.
Do you guys make these comments for every device that gets new colors or is it just with microsoft products?
lol... its heartning to find gizmodo and engadget, blogs - dare i say - obsessed with a particular fruit, posting quite a bit bout Zune in the last few days... n most of the posts actually talk about only the Zune without any reference to iPod. kudos..! a year back Zune posts were equivalent to the Apple's 'PC Vs Mac' type advertising.
i like it when people leave comments that are positive and nice and constructive and when people recognize that one mp3 player isn't inherently better than another one, that it's a matter of personal preference.
I have a Zune. I like it. I prefer them to iPods, but that's okay, if someone prefers the iPod that's fine too.
Zune 160GB?
@CCCombobreaker: If Apple had released new colors, there would have been a week of non-stop up to the minute coverage on Gizmodo, dozens of front page digg articles, etc. (There HAD TO have been more than one when Apple released the black iPods)
I don't see a problem with a single "Oh, by the way, xxxx released new colors of their xxxx". That's the kind of coverage I expect on a gadget news site.
@Mio: That's because you don't suffer from rabid fanboyism.
Wow for all the commenters being like "Ohh MS released colors which is soooo innovative (massive sarcasm)" you should shut the hell up, because when the ipod nano 3rd gen came out on gizmodo, I never saw any Zune owners (or anyone else for that matter) posting shit like that. STFU you rabid fanboy of Apple/Creative/Sandisk/whoeverthefuck, they're just rumors about a new color. There's nothing wrong with posting that up. Oh, and another thing, Zune HAS been very innovative since it's launch, there hasn't been anything that isn't new to the PMP market on their players since release. Zune v1- wifi (not new, but uncommon), wireless sharing, magnetic earbuds, double-shot effect, etc. Zune v2- Squircle, wireless sync, subscribe/unsubscribe from podcasts from the device itself, the recently added social friends on your Zune, etc. I think I've made my point.
@Mio:
It's not the reporting of the new colors. I was talking about the retarded, sarcasm filled comments like, "Oh wow new colors soooo innovative microsoft".
It doesn't make any sense because I highly doubt that if a new ipod color was released we would see a massive influx of similar comments. I just don't see how releasing a new color is somehow a bad thing or that it means microsoft has no innovation. IT JUST MEANS THEY HAVE RELEASED A NEW COLOR FOR THEIR DEVICE.
They should've done this the first time...

You're absolutely right. Why, just this week Microsoft announced cutting-edge Zune breakthroughs like Smart Playlists, TV show downloads, and gapless playback.
THE INNOVATION IS ASTOUNDING!
"because when the ipod nano 3rd gen came out on gizmodo, I never saw any Zune owners (or anyone else for that matter) posting shit like that." - Sam_Zebian
BZZZ, INCORRECT!
@Sam_Zebian: you know a zune owner? what are they like?
@LagunaSol: totally, and they even came up with an integrated software package, that like ties the player to your music on your computer... it was amazing!!!
ya, no big on the colors. good to know though.
and the change from a standard directional pad to the new zune pad is actually really nice, and a moderate change.
the software is really nice too.
you all need to settle down.
@LagunaSol:
Actually I was talking about the social features of the Zune. I'd say they are much more innovative than anything apple has done since the introduction of the Zune which was in 2006.
@LagunaSol: I see the semen is flowing in your veins... man just get your own penis and stop hoggin jobs'
3 day and still trolling...meh
Wow,what a following! The zune is almost shaping up to be something worth throwing over a balcony, eh Gizmodo editors?
SanDisk has triple the market share of the Zune and I never see so much hoopla about it.
Comment on New Zune Colors Make the Beast With Two Black Backs That's because Microsoft has a history of going after companies head on, and usually winning. Sandisk just wants a small piece of the pie. Microsoft wants Apple's piece of the pie. Kudos to Microsoft for constant innovation, firmware upgrades, $15 a month for unlimited music(hello apple?). I think IPOD is far to entrenched to be toppled but nobody is invincible. Look at what is happening to the Music industry.
@LagunaSol: Actually I'm correct (RTFA- [gizmodo.com])
@djdare: Yeah, actually I know a bunch of 'em, I've gotten many of my friends to either get Zunes as a new Mp3 player over their old and/or broken mp3 players, and all of them have enjoyed them very much. Oh, and they're like every other fucken human being, what did you expect us to be, crazy?
But will they keep the brown one?
They need to really make a puke green one and a diarrhea yellow one to go with the poop brown one.
@spenc938: or Xerox an interface
Would be cooler if they had four SDHC slots with raid0 ;)
@CCCombobreaker: I second that.
@Sam_Zebian: I second that also.
Viva La Resistance!
@LucettaLolzordz: "That's because Microsoft has a history of going after companies head on, and usually winning".
That's why, when they miserably fail (Zune, Vista...) it is funny as hell!!!
