XNA 3.0 tech preview is out, and with it, you can dev or install some homebrew games on your Zune right now, like Alien Aggressor and Galactic Wars 3. The directions are at [Zuneboards, thanks IPXX]

Sweet
Nifty.
Now just put some 'real' hardware in the Zune and let it shine as a games platform....
SWEET!!!
Apple should do the same. infortunately Apple will charge you $20 for a gaming app plus $5 for each game.
@YoMommaIsMyMomma:
damn typos
@YoMommaIsMyMomma: You'd think with all the iPhone news that gets posted you'd know that Apple is doing the same thing. They have an SDK out and games (including Monkeyball and Spore) will be out around when the store launches next month. Individual devs set their own prices, including free.
The iPhone (and iPod Touch) has "real" graphics hardware inside, too, judging from the looks of the game demos that have been shown off.
WHERES YOUR IGOD NOW??????
Zune revolution has begun :)
Zune 360! ...we all saw it coming.
Zune FTW!
Ya know... I hate Zunes and love my iPods... but if achs go mobile... I'm in
I'm doing this right now!
hope it doesn't include that copyright cop!
This has been zune week!
I can't wait to try this. There goes my battery, heh.
Just tried it out, directions are pretty clear. You've gotta install Visual Studio C# Express Edition 2008 as well as the CTP (I conveniently downloaded the Visual Studio stuff earlier this week)
Can now run Alien Aggressor on my Zune 30! (Even though it's a bit simplistic) It adds "games" to your main menu, and from there you choose the game. The Zune restarts when you quit the game though.
I can't get Galactic Wars 3 to load in Visual Studio, but apparently the controls only work with the touchpad (v2 Zunes). Still, if people keep developing and providing content like this for the system, the Zune could turn into quite the little gaming device!
From Jurai @ ZuneBoards Forum
You can fix Galaxy Wars 3 to support first generation zunes, simply open the following file, Player.cs, found in:
GW3
+-Entities
+-Player.cs
do a find and replace on the following
find:
Buttons.LeftThumbstickRight
replace with:
Buttons.DPadRight
find:
Buttons.LeftThumbstickLeft
replace with:
Buttons.DPadLeft
find:
Buttons.LeftShoulder
replace with:
Buttons.A
(you could also add OR's to the thumbstick if's in order to make the code zune30 & zune80 compat at same time)
save the file, deploy, enjoy
Finally Zune owners have redemption from iPod owners making fun of them all the time.
was easy as pie to deploy to the zune, sweet.
bring on the games zune community!!!!!!!
first game i want to see is the clock game, so everyone that was asking for one would shut up
:( I kept getting an error when trying to add a zune to Microsoft XNA Game Studio. But looks pretty cool I'll have to keep trying.
This is (kinda) cool. Gonna have a look at what's possible with this devkit. My feeling is that this is not going to allow much more than Java on a Mobile Phone does (and probably less), but we'll see...
between XBox and Zune - there is so much the ZuneBOX might be...
Those games are pretty craptastic, but I have a feeling the quality of the free games will improve dramatically as more basement/garage devs realize this is available. Now get to coding you monkeys!
@lpxxfaintxx:
Thanks for the tip, works great.
C'mon guys watch what will come out on the iPhone/iPod next month.... Does anyone really have a Zune....? It's like you go out there and watch people jogging etc... I haven't seen one yet.
@altus: Yes no one has a zune, iphone pwns all, blah blah mac, Steve Jobs rulez. Feel better?
@altus: I have one, my wife has one, and I've seen three or four others in the wild. All of the wal-marts in the area are sold out and I almost always see people looking at them in awe at Best Buy.
And the new gapless playback is awesome. :D
@chiablo: "people looking at them in awe at Best Buy"
...thinking, "are they still selling this shit"?
"And the new gapless playback is awesome"
