S Some contend that the best games are the simplest ones, and Burn the Rope is nothing if not simple. But it proves that with the right incentive—fire!—anyone will end up spinning their iPhone around like a madman.
What is it?
Burn the Rope, iPhone, $2. It's pretty simple: you spin your iPhone around to keep a rope burning—it only burns upwards—for as long as possible. There's not much else to it. But as those ropes get tied up in more complicated patterns, you have to think carefully about where you want to burn first. Along the way there complications like different color insects you have to burn before advancing to different sections of the rope, etc.
Who's it good for?
Pyromaniacs; kids; adults who don't mind spinning their iPhone around in public or private.
Why's it better than alternatives?
It's one of those games that you can hand to anyone and they'll just get it, instantly. It's probably not everyone's cup of tea, but I imagine it's one kids and their parents could both enjoy. It's got cute graphics, plenty of levels, and, hey, playing with fire's always a good time. (NOT IN REAL LIFE, DON'T DO THIS IN REAL LIFE).
How could it be even better?
Getting through the early levels can get a bit monotonous—the ability to speed up the flame to move things along would be nice—and Retina support would probably make everything pop a bit more. I think there's room for some more imaginative hurdles, too—say an insect that made the flame burn downwards or something.
