How San Diego Looks With the Lights Turned off

Yesterday, a sweeping power outage left six million people without power in the Southwest—including a huge swath of San Diegans. The result? An Emerald City that shined in patches, not flares. And it's actually kind of beautiful.

Also fun: turns out that the outage was the fault of a single electrical worker for Arizona utility APS. He apparently removed the wrong monitoring equipment at the wrong time, which set off a domino effect that reached as far as, well, San Diego. Power has since been restored in most areas, but the city might want to coordinate a lights out night again some time soon. It's just so much easier—in so many ways—on the eyes.
