Well done, consumers! In a brief press release issued just this afternoon, Verizon has announced its change of heart on the $2 “convenience fee” it was prepared to charge customers just for paying their bills online or by phone.

The official line from Verizon is below, but a combination of public pressure and a planned FCC investigation were no doubt behind the change of heart. Or, as Verizon Wireless president and CEO Dan Mead put it:

At Verizon, we take great care to listen to our customers. Based on their input, we believe the best path forward is to encourage customers to take advantage of the best and most efficient options, eliminating the need to institute the fee at this time.

Now quick, while they’re in retreat, everyone start moaning about those insanely high early termination fees! [Verizon]
