I have always wondered about two things since I was a kid and saw James Bond screwing a silencer into his gun: How the hell does a silencer look inside and how does it work? The picture above answers the first question and this animated infographic by SilencerCo, the second:
They are called suppressors - the name might seem trivial but it is far from it.
Suppressors slightly and I mean, slightly, reduce DB for reduced need to wear hearing equipment when firing. That is it.
An 'silencer' makes it sound like it would somehow silence the gun. This is not true.
We are talking 120 plus db for even the most quiet of guns. Literal deafening sound levels.
