Consumerist has a delightful little travelogue on Dirt Cheap, a store chain in Mississippi that sells crap that no one in their right minds would buy. Kind of like a low end Odd Lots, Dirt Cheap has Skirts with Yorkie patterns for $3.00 and AWESOME! kitchen cleaner for mere pennies.
Shopping is anonymous. No one greets you when you enter. Customers (a mix of senior citizens, minorities, middle class housewives and men who like to fix broken gadgets) barely talk to each other. Cashiers hardly acknowledge you when you are checking out. It is just you and the search for the ultimate deal.
It sounds like it could pass for bargain hell—heaven (??)— if Mississippi weren’t so humid.
