Amazon Made a Lamp That Tells Kids When Screen Time Is Over, and the Echo Glow Just Hit an All-Time Low

A night light that counts down bedtime in color, open to all shoppers.

Reading time 2 minutes

A countdown is easier for a five-year-old to accept when it comes from a lamp changing color than from a parent repeating the time. Amazon built the Echo Glow for moments like that, and the newest model goes from $29.99 to $22.99 on Amazon, a price shown to every customer, Prime member or otherwise. It is a smart night light for children’s rooms that takes its instructions from Alexa.

A Sunrise Alarm and a Color-Changing Countdown

The two ends of the day are where the Echo Glow is most useful. In the evening it can fade out gradually, which gives a child a calm signal that it is time to sleep and avoids the sudden switch from light to dark. In the morning it works the other way, as a sunrise alarm that grows brighter little by little until the room is lit. That is the function I would set up first, because waking to light is gentler than waking to a buzzer, for adults as much as for kids.

During the day, the lamp turns routines into something a child can see. You can attach a lighting cue to a chore or a reminder, so the Glow changes color when it is time to tidy up or get dressed, and you can start a countdown timer that shifts color as the minutes pass. Two minutes of tooth brushing or the last ten minutes of screen time become visible, and I think that is the cleverest use of the product: the lamp announces the deadline, and the parent does not have to.

As a mood light, it offers a palette that Amazon counts in the millions of colors, with adjustable brightness. A soft orange works for reading a story, a dim blue for the night. There are dynamic modes too, which run light shows or make the lamp react to music and sound, and those will get plenty of use at a birthday party or a bedroom dance session.

Setup follows the usual Amazon routine: plug the lamp in, open the Alexa app and follow the steps, which takes a few minutes. For voice control, the Echo Glow pairs with a compatible Alexa device, and Amazon names the Echo Dot, the Echo Dot Kids and the Echo Pop Kids. A child can then ask for a color or a brightness level out loud. With Alexa+, routines and schedules can be created by describing them in plain language, so “turn the Glow red ten minutes before bedtime” is enough.

For siblings in separate rooms, the pair is the better buy: the Echo Glow is $22.99 instead of $29.99 on Amazon as a single lamp, and the 2-pack is $42.99 instead of $59.98, or about $21.50 each. Amazon labels the single lamp a limited time deal, with free returns and no Prime membership required.
