Here's what the DIY-er has to say:

Yes, it's a steam powered record player. Playing a punk LP. The Sex Pistols – God save the Queen (Victoria obviously). You can't really get more steam, or punk, than that! And yes, I know it sounds terrible.

At least he knows it! The project started when he decided to build a small steam engine from parts he found in his garage. If he could manage to create this from spare parts in a garage, well, damn, that must be one helluva garage. [Asciimation via Laughing Squid]

Why does it sound so bad?

Assuming the vinyl turns at 100/3 rpm, which it does because it is PID controlled by an Arduino, it shouldn't matter that much right?

I'm going out on a limb and say he should've mounted dampers between the steam engine and the base of the record player.
