This week, the Artemis 2 traveled further away from Earth than anyone ever has. But they’re still very firmly aware of what’s going on down here on Earth, even in movie theaters. Case in point, not only were the astronauts allowed to watch the current hit Project Hail Mary before heading to space, they’re already throwing out references, just like us.
First up, in a recent interview, Artemis 2 astronaut Jeremy Hansen explained that he and the crew got to see the in-theater film before heading on their mission. “We were all really lucky,” Hansen said. “We got to watch Hail Mary when we were in quarantine. That was a real treat that they sent us a link to view that at home with our families, getting us ready to go on our own space adventure.”
Gosling and the crew were aware of this, of course, and even sent a message to the crew wishing them the best of luck.
Sending the biggest congrats and best wishes to the #ArtemisII crew, from everyone on the #ProjectHailMary team. 🫡 🚀 pic.twitter.com/qnwkOHrpoq

Things really took a fun turn Monday, however, when the astronauts were taking photos of Mars from space, and this happened.

Yes, that’s a reference to Project Hail Mary star Rocky and what’s come to be one of his catch phrases. The Project Hail Mary official account was obviously excited about the quote.
Now that's an "amaze" heard 'round the world! https://t.co/RTzR1knDFl

So it’s really simple. If you want to get to see movies early, get recognized by celebrities, and have the world be excited about your movie references, all you have to do is become an astronaut and make history by going further into space than anyone else. No problem, right?
Project Hail Mary is still in theaters. Artemis 2 is, also, still in space. If you want to read more about the trip, head over to Gizmodo’s Space & Spaceflight page as well as this live blog.
