In the early Sixties, you could thumb through the Yellow Pages to find a plumber, exterminator, or nuclear defense vault. Here’s one such ad from the 1962 Philadelphia Yellow Pages. “Increase your chances of survival by 4,000 percent!”

You can find several more oddly mundane fallout shelter ads over at Conelrad Adjacent. You can also check out a nuclear escape plan for the city of Philadelphia from the 1950s, and the Alert America showgirls, who traveled around America informing citizens of the impending Cold War doomsday, all the while acting preternaturally pert and optimistic.
