Is Malwarebytes Safe and Legitimate?

Malwarebytes safety searches hide three issues. Some people are asking about the company. Some have just downloaded a file and want to know whether it’s the genuine article. Others are staring at a pop-up claiming their PC is infected and want to know if Malwarebytes sent it. The phrasing is Malwarebytes a safe app covers all three. The answers differ, so I’ve taken them separately.

Is the Company Legitimate?

Yes, and this is the easy answer. Marcin Kleczynski founded Malwarebytes in 2008 and is still its CEO. The company is private and headquartered in Santa Clara, California. It has raised $180 million in total, recently a $100 million minority investment from Vector Capital in September 2022.

It spun its business portfolio out under the ThreatDown name in November 2023 and bought the Swedish VPN provider AzireVPN in November 2024. People searching for a Malwarebytes corporation review are usually checking this. The short version is that Malwarebytes is legit by every ordinary measure.

Fake Malwarebytes Downloads and How to Spot Them

The software collects license and machine identifiers, system configuration, and details of the malware it detects. IP addresses arrive with those requests, become a rough continent-and-city location, then get discarded. The VPN section is specific about what it leaves alone.

No browsing details, DNS requests, bandwidth figures, device IP, or app telemetry. Browser Guard is the one component touching browsing data, collecting blocked page URLs, excluded domains, and general statistics, anonymized and aggregated with no full histories kept. Each has an opt-out in the settings. The policy says periods vary by data type and publishes no figures.

The incident record has one entry: in December 2020 the actor behind the SolarWinds campaign reached a limited set of internal emails through a dormant Microsoft 365 app. Nothing since, which is more than five clean years and a fair reason to call Malwarebytes trustworthy.

Only the paid one does. The consequence is blunt: if the free version is the only security software on a PC, that PC is unprotected between scans.

Malwarebytes built its name as the thing you opened after your antivirus failed. A generation of users still files it under cleanup tools. This comes from a paid plan on my Windows 11 Pro bench, a Ryzen 7 5800X with 32 GB of RAM and two M.2 SSDs, with an 18-second boot baseline.

Independent Lab Results and What They Leave Out

AV-TEST evaluated Malwarebytes Premium 5.5 across March and April 2026 and awarded it TOP PRODUCT with 17.5 of 18 points:

• Protection 5.5/6. Zero-day blocking of 98.9% and 97.7% against a 99.4% industry average, and 99.9% twice on the reference set against 100%.

Removal Performance on Already-Infected Machines

This is the claim the brand was built on, so I tested it. I infected a virtual machine with six samples spread across different persistence methods and executed them with no security software present. Then I installed Malwarebytes onto the already-compromised image. A single Threat Scan caught all six.

Everything was removed; the registry keys and processes were gone when I checked, and nothing returned after a restart. Does Malwarebytes work as a cleaner? Yes, completely, and it needed only its default scan to do it.

Real-Time Protection and Web Filtering in Testing

Detection across my sample set came to 99.57%, with offline detection at 91.3%. That offline figure tracks the lab closely, suggesting the same cloud dependence AV-Comparatives measured. Phishing pages were blocked at 89%. False alarms are the sore spot. I logged 14. Norton and Bitdefender managed 3 and 5 in my tests.

645 MB is roughly triple what the lighter suites use, and a default setting explains it. Under Scan and detections, “Prioritize scans (faster scans)” is selected. Switching to “Prioritize system” trades speed for a quieter machine.

Is Malwarebytes Still as Good as It Used to Be?

Malwarebytes charges the same in year two as in year one, where second-year increases of 100% to 200% are normal in this category. Individual plans also come in a 5-device version, and Family plans in a 20-device version, so the ladder has no forced jump over the size you need.

Malwarebytes on Mac is a strong fit because of what infects Macs. Adware, browser hijackers, and unwanted programs make up the bulk of it, and this engine removes that category best. Malwarebytes rebuilt the macOS scan engine in December 2025 and added a Mac firewall, layered over the operating system’s own, that simplifies incoming connection management. Norton is the bigger suite by some distance: cloud backup, a full firewall, a password manager, dark web monitoring, and parental controls from Deluxe up. It also detected 99.8% with only 3 false alarms on my bench and blocked 95% of phishing pages, both better than Malwarebytes.

Defender is resident and free, and it’s the layer Malwarebytes Free doesn’t have. Running both is legitimate: Defender watches continuously, Malwarebytes handles scans and second opinions. Defender detected 88% offline in my testing and swept the drive in 12:24, so it’s capable, though not exceptional.

✅ Buy If:

• You have an infection right now. It removed all six infections from a compromised image, and the default scan did it.
• You already have an antivirus. It coexists cleanly, so it works as a second opinion beside whatever guards the machine.
• You use a Mac and adware is the worry. That’s the threat category this engine targets directly.
• You want a plain app over a feature list. The flat second-year price helps here too.

❌ Skip It If: 

• You shop on first-year price alone. Norton AntiVirus Plus opens at $29.99 and Bitdefender Antivirus Plus at $24.99.
• You want one subscription for everything. No standalone firewall, no parental controls, no cloud backup, no password manager.
• You need a long testing record. The lab coverage is recent and strong, but thin.

The cleanup reputation holds up, and a single default scan removed every infection I threw at it. AV-TEST’s TOP PRODUCT award and a flat renewal price make the paid tiers easier to recommend than they were.

My bench and AV-Comparatives flagged more legitimate files than the labs recorded, and 3 of the protections arrive switched off.
