Are Norton and McAfee the Same Company?
No. Norton belongs to Gen Digital, which also owns Avast, AVG, and Avira. McAfee has been privately held since March 2022. Its owners are an investor group led by Advent International and Permira, with Crosspoint Capital, CPP Investments, GIC, and a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. The enterprise business went to Symphony Technology Group in 2021, so McAfee now sells to consumers only.
Both are decades-old American brands, both turn up preinstalled on new laptops, and both discount hard in year one before renewing at two or three times the price. One practical point first: never install both at once. Two scanners inspect the same files and flag each other’s quarantine folders, producing slowdowns and false alerts that look like an infection.
Protection: Which One Blocks More Malware?
Norton AntiVirus vs McAfee AntiVirus is decided here more than anywhere else. Both brands score well, so the differences are narrow and the precise figures earn their place. Let’s inspect their independent lab scores first:

McAfee’s offline figure reproduces the lab’s 86.1%, confirming how much of the engine depends on a cloud lookup. I also pointed both at a machine already infected with 6 samples. Norton’s quick scan detected all 6 immediately after installation. McAfee’s quick scan found 5 and missed a WMI event subscription.
I could only clear it up with the full system scan. Both cleared everything, and nothing returned after a restart. The same 6 samples went into my wider test of what actually clears an infection that’s already on the machine.

The two work differently. Norton Safe Web rates sites and blocks the dangerous ones as you browse. McAfee splits the job between WebAdvisor in the browser and Scam Detector, which reads text messages, email, and video. On an old mailbox, it flagged genuine scams correctly, with 3 false alerts.
Ransomware Protection Compared
Norton’s control is under Security, Advanced, Ransomware Protection, and it is on. Smart Mode is the default. Trusted apps can change files in protected folders, and unknown ones ask permission. Strict Mode demands approval for everything. Protected folders arrive pre-populated with Documents, Pictures, and Desktop.
Cloud backup adds a recovery copy, though it’s Windows-only. McAfee has no ransomware panel to find. The defense is folded into the real-time scanning engine, on by default with no switch to turn it off, so it can’t be misconfigured. On detection, it backs up dangerous files, quarantines them, and offers a manual restore.
There’s no cloud backup on any McAfee plan. Both approaches are ranked against three other products in my breakdown of which defenses arrive switched on and which don’t.

McAfee is the lighter of the two when nothing is happening. Under load, the position reverses, and it reverses by design. McAfee’s Antivirus panel has a Fast scanning toggle enabled out of the box. The app describes it as using all available system resources for a quicker scan, and suggests switching it off for better performance. Turn it off and the CPU figure drops, while the 16:47 gets longer.

McAfee offers 2 scan types and no boot-time scan, so a machine too infected to start has nothing to fall back on. Norton’s bootable rescue media scans before Windows loads, and took 16 minutes 39 seconds on my test machine.
Cloud backup is the biggest absence on the McAfee side, and it’s the feature ransomware makes you wish you had. Norton’s LifeLock tiers are US-only, and McAfee’s credit and identity features need a Social Security number.

Norton’s servers are physical, and it publishes a quarterly transparency report alongside the audit. McAfee publishes almost nothing about its network. McAfee’s VPN settings arrive with Safe reconnect off, so traffic keeps flowing outside the tunnel if the connection drops. Its privacy notice states the VPN doesn’t collect originating IP addresses, DNS queries, or the sites and apps used.
But no audit backs that claim. Neither VPN fares well against my #1, NordVPN, or #2, Proton VPN. McAfee VPN vs NordVPN is the right question to be asking, and I’ve put the two side by side on speed, servers, and streaming. If the VPN is the reason for the purchase, buy one separately.

Up to 3 devices, Norton is cheaper across two years: Standard covers 3 for $134.98, and the closest McAfee plan costs $159.98. From 4 upward, McAfee wins and keeps winning. At 10 devices, Norton’s Select Plus works out to $289.98, while McAfee Premium covers the whole house for $199.98.
Both punish loyalty, and I’m baffled to say this. Norton 360 Deluxe, for example, climbs 150% at renewal, and McAfee Essential and Premium both climb 200%. There’s also a cheaper entry point on the Norton side, so a single-PC household compares $89.98 across two years to $159.98.

Norton 360 vs McAfee means Deluxe against McAfee’s 5-device plan. Deluxe covers 5 devices with 50 GB of cloud backup, Norton Family parental controls, and Privacy Monitor for $174.98 over 2 years. McAfee+ Essential covers 5 devices with Personal Data Cleanup and Scam Detector for $159.98, with no backup.
McAfee vs Norton 360 is a different answer. Once device counts pass 5, McAfee Total Protection vs Norton 360 stops being like-for-like. McAfee removes the limit for $199.98, and Norton charges $289.98 for 10 devices.
Which Norton Plan Should You Buy?
Norton 360 Deluxe, for most people: $49.99 in the first year, 5 devices, 50 GB of cloud backup. Drop to Standard if 3 devices cover the household, and take Select Plus only in the US, and only when identity monitoring is the reason for buying. The Norton 360 or Norton AntiVirus question trips up more buyers than other parts of this Norton antivirus comparison.
Norton AntiVirus Plus is single-device protection: real-time scanning, Smart Firewall, Scam Protection, password manager, deepfake protection, and 2 GB of backup, for $29.99 in year one. Norton AntiVirus Plus vs Norton 360 turns on the VPN and dark web monitoring, plus room for more devices.
Device count and backup allowance climb together up the ladder:
- AntiVirus Plus, 1 device, 2 GB backup. One PC, nothing else to cover, no use for a VPN.
- Standard, 3 devices, 2 GB backup. The cheapest tier with the VPN. Built for one person with a laptop and a phone.
- Deluxe, 5 devices, 50 GB backup. Adds Privacy Monitor and Parental Control. The family pick, and Norton flags it as its own best deal.
- Select Plus with LifeLock, 10 devices, 250 GB backup. Adds one-bureau credit monitoring, Stolen Wallet Protection, and $25,000 in stolen funds reimbursement.

Which McAfee Plan Should You Buy?
The McAfee LiveSafe vs Total Protection question has changed shape. McAfee’s Total Protection page serves the McAfee+ cards, so on the US store, Total Protection is no longer a separate purchase. Checkout offers Essential, Premium Individual, and Advanced Individual.
McAfee LiveSafe keeps its own page and its own Buy Now button, at $39.99 for the first year and $149.99 on renewal, covering unlimited devices. So McAfee Total Protection vs LiveSafe, for a new buyer, means comparing a family plan to a single legacy product. The best McAfee products for most people are:
- Essential, 5 devices, $39.99. Antivirus, VPN, web protection, identity monitoring.
- Premium Individual, unlimited devices, $49.99. Adds Personal Data Cleanup and online account removal. The tier to buy.
- Advanced Individual, unlimited devices, $89.99. Adds Social Privacy Manager and up to $1M in identity theft coverage.
One condition applies across the range, and to LiveSafe too. The VPN, the expanded identity monitoring, and McAfee’s Virus Protection Pledge require auto-renewal to be on. Norton attaches the same requirement to its Virus Protection Promise, so neither brand is unusual, but both are easy to miss at checkout. Trial lengths differ: McAfee gives 30 days, Norton 7 days.
Is McAfee a Good Antivirus on Its Own?
Yes. It detected all 10 attack scenarios in AV-TEST’s Advanced Threat Protection round and scored a perfect 35 of 35, took 6/6/6 and a Top Product badge in the June 2026 Windows round, and caught 99.71% on my own bench. That’s genuinely good virus protection, and no plan in the category matches its unlimited device coverage.
Offline detection is the weak point. It produced 7 false alarms to Norton’s 3. The renewal is steep, with Essential and Premium both tripling. McAfee AntiVirus vs Norton comes out the same way on every measure I recorded. What survives that is the household, which has stopped counting its devices, where unlimited coverage at $49.99 beats anything Norton sells.
Do You Need Norton or McAfee, or Is Windows Defender Enough?
Microsoft Defender vs Norton is a fairer fight than it was a few years ago. Defender took 6/5.5/6 at AV-TEST in June 2026. At AV-Comparatives, it posted 89.2% offline and 98.1% online detection with only 3 false alarms. On my machine, it finished a full scan in 12 minutes 24 seconds and added 4 seconds to boot.
It’s free, built-in, and needs no setup. In the Advanced Threat Protection round, it scored 31 of 35, detecting 9 of 10 attacks and missing an infostealer completely. Both paid suites scored 35. It has no bundled VPN, cloud backup, identity or dark web monitoring, and no apps for Android, iOS or macOS.
Its detection also depends heavily on a connection: with cloud lookups disabled, it fell to 88% in my testing. Several free suites beat Defender on features, and my ranking of the free tiers covers where each stops.
✅ Stay on Defender if:
- One Windows PC, always online, is the whole estate
- Backups already run somewhere else
- Browsing habits are cautious, and downloads are rare

Norton vs McAfee on Windows 11
Windows 11 already provides Smart App Control, SmartScreen, core isolation, and a TPM requirement, so any suite is a second layer. Every test here was done on Windows 11 Pro. Both handed off cleanly from Windows Security without leaving Defender half-active, and neither caused compatibility problems.
Which is better, Norton or McAfee for Windows 11 comes back to scan speed and detection, where Norton leads and is, therefore, objectively better.
Apps and Everyday Use on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone
Windows. McAfee downloaded and installed in 1 minute 5 seconds with no prompts and nothing pre-selected. Norton took 2 minutes 43 seconds. McAfee’s app is one clean window. There’s an icon rail, a device status card reading “Protecting you 24×7,” and 4 shortcut tiles. Norton’s is denser, and it has a structural problem. Dark Web Monitoring and account functions open in a browser, so settings are spread across two places that look nothing alike.
Mac. Norton keeps a full firewall on macOS that behaves as the Windows version does. Cloud backup is Windows only. McAfee’s Mac firewall is a simplified helper over Apple’s own controls, and its web filtering covers Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. I benchmarked both on an M1 Air for my macOS roundup.

AV-TEST’s May 2026 mobile round gave both 6/6/6. Samsung’s built-in App Protection is powered by McAfee, so many Galaxy owners already have the engine. Neither app tops the Android field once the rest of the category is measured.
iPhone. Both include an iOS app in every subscription, so either plan already covers the phone at no extra cost.

Norton’s chatbot narrows the problem by category and offers self-help articles before passing anyone along, then escalates on request. The human answered accurately. Its forum has no McAfee equivalent, which matters for the questions nobody wants to open a ticket over. One irritation, though, is that the in-app support link returned an HTTP 400 error every time, though it may be an error on my side.
McAfee’s is reached from the account, and it was the better experience. The support assistant asked for a short description, then handed over without argument. Asking for a refund took one sentence, and the payment reached my account before the end of the day. Norton’s Virus Protection Promise works differently.
If a Norton expert can’t clean an infection, the current subscription is refunded, typically within 1 to 3 business days. Auto-renewal has to be switched on for the promise to apply, so keep this in mind.
Norton and McAfee vs the Alternatives
Norton and McAfee vs Bitdefender
The strongest third option. On the same machine, Bitdefender matched Norton’s 99.8% detection with 5 false alarms, took 14 minutes 3 seconds at 11% CPU, and added 8 seconds to boot. Total Security costs $59.99, then $109.99 for 5 devices, the cheapest renewal of the three. Ransomware Remediation is off by default and has to be enabled manually, which I go into in the Bitdefender review.
McAfee vs Webroot
Webroot’s most recent AV-Comparatives performance test dates to 2012, and its AV-TEST results to 2019. No current independent measurement exists of how it detects or what it costs a machine. Is Webroot better than McAfee? Nobody can answer that with data. A security product nobody has independently tested this decade is hard to recommend over one with two current Top Product badges.
Norton vs Malwarebytes
Norton antivirus vs Malwarebytes compares different categories. Malwarebytes Free is an on-demand cleaner for an already infected machine. It took 17.5 of 18 and a Top Product badge from AV-TEST in March and April 2026, so it’s capable. Norton and McAfee vs AVG
AVG vs Norton is unusual because they share an owner. Both belong to Gen Digital. Both post identical figures across every column of the AV-Comparatives March 2026 table, which is as close to proof of a shared detection core as public data gets. AVG Internet Security covers 10 devices at $59.88, then $99.99.

Other Comparisons Worth Knowing
PC Matic vs Norton pits allowlisting against a conventional engine. PC Matic blocks anything not explicitly approved, buying a different kind of safety at the cost of more interruptions. Measured on both: detection against shared samples online and offline, phishing blocking against a fixed URL set, peak CPU and memory during scans, scan durations, boot deltas, install times, and streaming checks on the VPN connections. Each also got a live support interaction and a refund request.
Verdict
Norton 360 is the better antivirus in 2026. It caught more and blocked more phishing. It scanned faster on a lighter processor load, and it includes the one recovery feature McAfee has never offered. Norton 360 Deluxe at $49.99 for the first year is best for most households, and it holds the top spot in my 2026 antivirus ranking.
McAfee earns its place for more devices than anyone wants to count. McAfee+ Premium covers all of them for $49.99, and its support was faster. If the renewal price is the sticking point, look at McAfee alternatives before signing up. McAfee competitors like Bitdefender renew considerably lower.
