If you’ve been debating whether to get McAfee VPN or NordVPN, you’ve come to the right place. Both are fairly popular and, broadly speaking, well-known names in the cybersecurity industry. However, McAfee has traditionally specialized in something else—device security. It’s best known for its antivirus software and other quality-of-life tools designed to keep your device and identity safe. NordVPN, on the other hand, is a dedicated VPN service, focused primarily on privacy protection, with the added benefits of bypassing geo-blocks and enhancing streaming access. With McAfee’s deeper push into the VPN industry, its proprietary VPN was born.
Today, we’ll settle the McAfee vs NordVPN debate by comparing both services across eight extensive tests. We’ll cover everything from security and privacy to compatibility, streaming, pricing, and more. Let’s find out which one is better in 2026—NordVPN or McAfee VPN.

Applications & Ease of Use
We’ll dive right in and talk about applications, ease of use, and general compatibility. In our NordVPN vs McAfee VPN comparison, we immediately noticed just how barebones the latter is. While NordVPN works on a heap of devices, McAfee VPN is only available for Windows, Android, and iOS. By extension, it’s all but a recommended Mac VPN.
We can’t say the same for NordVPN. This one works on macOS plus all other platforms we mentioned a second ago. Moreover, the Panamanian company developed apps for Smart TVs, Apple TV and Firestick devices, Nvidia Shield TV, routers, and dozens more.
Simultaneous connections are as follows:
- NordVPN offers 10;
- McAfee VPN offers 5.
Moving on to ease of use, we think NordVPN has an edge. Its modern apps are as exciting as they’re intuitive, with many features, yet easy navigation. You’ll find NordVPN’s apps snappy and ready to connect in seconds. Plus, bugs and glitches are non-existent across the board.

We love its mobile apps too, as they’re almost as feature-rich as their desktop counterparts. On Smart TVs, for example, NordVPN is extremely smooth unlike some of its clunkier rivals. McAfee VPN looks quite dated and has this world map, which has no function.

NordVPN’s world map is fully interactive, making it a lot more interesting. McAfee VPN is also very clunky, connection times are longer, and the app isn’t very feature-rich. You can choose a specific server or opt for the fastest location and connect with a click.
We tested its Android and iOS apps – they look better. Sadly, they’re far from smooth and premium compared to NordVPN. Pair that with the latter’s 10 simultaneous connections and better compatibility and you get NordVPN as the winner of this round.
McAfee VPN vs NordVPN Price Comparison
We value when the VPN has flexible plans and prices from a freedom of choice standpoint. McAfee VPN doesn’t excel in this aspect but NordVPN does, as it offers 3 months, 3 annual, and 3 biennial plans. The last ones are by far the cheapest and they cost this much:

As you can see, the Basic plan at under $3.40/mo looks quite attractive, while the Plus, which includes NordPass, is a phenomenal value. We also love the Complete plan because it includes NordLocker which we tested recently, with a whopping 1 TB of secure storage.
We can notice that all 2-year plans are discounted by at least 70%. Depending on the current promotion, NordVPN will sprinkle in a few free months or even include larger discounts occasionally. You’ll get the latest and greatest NordVPN deals through our buttons.

Let’s briefly mention NordVPN’s annual plans, which are discounted to a degree. Starting at around $4.60/mo, the Basic plan offers the same amazing VPN features and security features. You can go up to Prime if you need NordProtect for more online safety.
Here’s how much McAfee VPN costs:

Not as flexible as NordVPN. Plus, there are no long-term and short-term plans. All plans are annual and start at $39.99/year for the Privacy plan with a VPN. The current promotion renders the said plan obsolete with the Privacy + Security plan with an antivirus.
As you can see, they cost the same.
The Privacy + Security + Identity plan at $89.99/year is ridiculously packed. You’ll get $1M ID theft coverage, personal data clean-up, and more. Think of this as NordVPN’s Prime plan because you also get a password manager, a firewall, a file shredder, and way more.
Which VPN Is More Affordable?
NordVPN is a great VPN for budget users but McAfee seems more affordable this time.
Is it really? Well, let’s take into account its renewal prices.
The initial $39.99 for the first year is bumped to $109.99 a year, for example, which translates to about $9.2/mo. Given McAfee VPN’s overall quality, that price is an overstretch. NordVPN’s renewal prices are larger as well. The Basic plan in the US costs $139.08/year after the “honeymoon” phase.
If we divide it by 12, it turns out to be $11.60/mo, making NordVPN a bit more expensive.
Both VPNs have a 30-day money-back guarantee for all plans but they lack free plans.
In the end, NordVPN’s slightly higher price brings way more with it but from a pure affordability standpoint, McAfee VPN takes the round.
NordVPN vs McAfee VPN: Features Analysis
Our next McAfee VPN vs NordVPN round takes us to their features. By features, we mostly refer to security features found in the app and those passive working in the background.
Shared Features
McAfee VPN didn’t do a great job of equipping its service with more than essentials. NordVPN is far better here but they still share a few things, such as:
- 256-bit encryption
- Automatic kill switch
- Advanced protection
Okay, so both have bank-grade encryption and that’s expected from premium VPN services. Their kill switches work extraordinarily and manage to shut down the internet connection each time the VPN connection stops. We know this because we tested both first-hand.
Now, in terms of advanced protection, both VPNs can block ads and other malignancies.

They even offer advanced protection in their more expensive plans, lacking any semblance of these features in their cheapest offers. NordVPN Plus offers Threat Protection Pro, while McAfee VPN’s Privacy + Security plan includes a firewall, a file shredder, and web protection.
This file shredder is more of a clean-up tool for permanently removing unneeded files. Threat Protection Pro is more about real-time protection against malware, viruses, and ads, and in our NordVPN vs McAfee VPN test, it displayed more “significant” results, so to speak.

On the other hand, McAfee Antivirus, which is in the said package, is better than NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro at removing viruses. Likely because it’s a dedicated tool. Overall, both seem to do a phenomenal job and while NordVPN offers better ad-blocking, McAfee VPN’s virus protection is superior.
Unique Features
NordVPN is a grand inventor in the world of VPNs and you won’t find a more densely packed provider at this price. This is a telltale sign it’s going to win this round but let’s still compare it to McAfee VPN and see what’s up.
Protocol Selection
NordVPN uses an in-house NordLynx protocol, which is an improved version of WireGuard. This improvement irons out WireGuard’s inherent privacy concerns and speeds it up to make NordVPN one of the best VPNs for speed. McAfee VPN uses Catapult Hydra, instead.
If it rings a bell or two, that’s because you’ve heard of it in Hotspot Shield.
It’s a protocol based on OpenVPN TLS, which is all about security, privacy, and speed. It should also be able to sidestep censorship but we’ll see if that’s the case later. Apart from the said protocols, you’ll find OpenVPN in both, and IKEv2 and NordWhisper for overcoming network filtering in NordVPN.
MultiHop Protection
MultiHop is absent from McAfee VPN but you’ll find it in NordVPN as a Double VPN.

Connect to this “server” and you’ll get double encryption by routing your traffic through two servers in different countries. NordVPN’s Double VPN servers offer unbeatable privacy and are ideal for going on the dark web, even though it has a special Onion over VPN servers for that.
Passive Features
On paper, at least, NordVPN seems to have more passive features than McAfee VPN.
For example, the Blue team offers:
- Perfect Forward Secrecy
- RAM-based servers
- Private DNS servers
McAfee VPN might offer these as well but there’s no mention of it. All three are quintessential for privacy and are aimed at reinforcing the no-log policy by reassuring the user that everything is in NordVPN’s capable hands, with minimal third-party interference.
All things considered, NordVPN offers superior security features to McAfee VPN.

Do McAfee VPN and NordVPN Store Logs?
We mentioned a no-logging policy, so it’s time to see which of the two companies has a better one but “better” isn’t a word we should be using here. You either have a zero-log policy or you don’t, and this list highlights all the best VPNs that do if you’re in for it.
On this list, you’ll find NordVPN and not McAfee VPN because of obvious reasons.
NordVPN doesn’t store logs and operates under a strict zero-log policy, as indicated by multiple third-party audits from Deloitte and PwC. If you give it a look, you’ll see that NordVPN stores no info on your IP address, browsing history, DNS requests, etc.

Its RAM-only servers are also part of the equation because they’re wiped clean with each restart, so every bit of information is lost. McAfee VPN’s privacy policy is hard to dig out but when you do, you’ll see the company admits to retaining some logs, which is a no-go.

These logs include your IP address, geolocation, some browsing history, and a few more. McAfee doesn’t have a third-party audit on its no-log policy, although there are third-party audits on TunnelBear whose server infrastructure is used by McAfee VPN.
However, TunnelBear is a separate VPN, and using its servers doesn’t instantly mean you’re using the same VPN. To clarify, TunnelBear, even in its free version, is safer and more private than McAfee. Finally, let’s mention their jurisdictions as another privacy parameter.
NordVPN is in Panama, while McAfee is in the USA, which is a 5 Eyes founder.
To cut it short, NordVPN is better for privacy, as it enforces a no-log policy, which McAfee VPN lacks.

Which VPN Is Faster: NordVPN or McAfee VPN?
Our NordVPN vs McAfee VPN speed test will gauge the two VPNs across a variety of locations. We were in Europe, Belgrade, at the time of testing the two, with native, non-VPN speeds displayed below.

We decided to perform our speed tests on three server locations, such as the UK, which was a bit closer, and then the USA and Japan, which were farther away. To ensure maximum accuracy, both providers have been tested 3 times a day, 3 days in a row as well.
Protocol selection was left untouched. In other words, we used the automatic setting in both VPNs, which likely meant both were putting their best feet forward i.e. using NordLynx and Catapult Hydra. The first table displays the average speed loss percentages we discovered:
| Download Speed Loss | Upload Speed Loss | |
| NordVPN | 18% | 7% |
| McAfee VPN | 59% | 50% |
To complement these percentages, we also divulged our average download and upload speeds for both VPNs, based on a total of 3 tests for each VPN location (9 in total).
| UK (Download/Upload) | US (Download/Upload) | Japan (Download/Upload) | |
| NordVPN | 324.25/18.68 Mbps | 292.75/18.31 Mbps | 223.54/17.85 Mbps |
| McAfee VPN | 227.85/12.77 Mbps | 150.73/8.64 Mbps | 68.51/7.85 Mbps |
Regardless of the table you look at, NordVPN seems to take the upper hand.
VPNs can slow down your internet speed but NordVPN does so marginally compared to McAfee VPN. With higher speed retention scores, the Panamanian team once again takes the gold medal.
Streaming & Torrenting Comparison
Speed is one aspect of streaming and P2P but it’s roughly 30% of the entire picture.
So, if you prioritize entertainment, which streaming and torrenting are, should you choose NordVPN or McAfee VPN? Our experts discovered huge differences in these aspects and we’re ready to uncover them in this comparison.
Streaming Performance
If you think McAfee VPN can top NordVPN in streaming, you’re dead wrong. The former performs poorly apart from occasionally unblocking Netflix US anywhere. BBC iPlayer always detects this VPN, not to mention other “stubborn” platforms that simply wouldn’t budge.
NordVPN doesn’t have one horse for this race. It has a whole pack!
First, its apps are optimized for streaming, so you can unblock 20+ Netflix catalogs easily. Services like BBC iPlayer, Max, Hulu, and others work like a charm abroad. There’s also the browser extension, which offers location spoofing for added streaming prowess.

On top of everything, NordVPN offers Smart DNS, which McAfee VPN, again, lacks.
Smart DNS is optimized for streaming and is a DNS service you can use on your computer or other non-VPN-optimized platforms. While it works only with the US services, that’s more than enough for most. For instance, this means you can also access NFL live streams abroad!
Paired with range-topping speed and connection stability, NordVPN is a “meat and potato” for streaming.
Torrenting Performance
Torrenting is all over the place with NordVPN but in a good way. With P2P servers all around the place (globe), you’ll find the desired server in seconds. Once you connect, you’ll be amazed at the speed and security that permeate your torrenting experience.
NordVPN works ideally with torrent clients and its SOCKS5 addition complements the experience thanks to an easy setup. More importantly, you can torrent “outside” P2P servers, so if you use, let’s say, a Double VPN one, P2P traffic won’t be blocked. Impressive!
McAfee VPN made us think it’s not P2P-friendly, unlike any other paid torrenting VPN we tested.

After testing every location, we found that just a few actually allow P2P. This is far from great if you want to maximize speed and prevent performance degradation. With NordVPN, you always have a nearby server to capitalize on performance, whilst this VPN is just tragic.
Given McAfee’s loss in both streaming and P2P, we declare NordVPN the absolute winner.
Server Locations
Let’s gauge the server breadth of both VPNs and see which one offers more. We won’t focus purely on numbers but on other server-specific features and server variety.
| NordVPN | McAfee VPN | |
| Servers | 7,300+ | 2,000+ |
| Countries | 117+ | 47+ |
| RAM Servers | Yes | No |
| Dedicated Servers | Yes | No |
The table below favors NordVPN but it’s not the table’s fault; it’s just NordVPN’s superiority.
It has way more servers in way more countries, as you could assume from a mile away. With RAM and Private DNS servers, NordVPN adds another punch to McAfee VPN’s belly. Dedicated servers permeate NordVPN’s network as well, much to McAfee VPN’s detriment.
The former offers:
- P2P servers
- Double VPN servers
- Onion Over VPN servers
- Obfuscated servers
- Dedicated IP servers
The last ones are fairly interesting because dedicated IPs offer plenty of benefits, like mitigating security risks by not sharing the IP with anyone else. NordVPN’s obfuscated servers can bypass censorship, as well.
Plus, you have a host of Onion Over VPN servers to use with Tor, and the rest, which we mentioned in this in-depth comparison. We could go on like this forever but we think it’s time to cut it short again and give NordVPN its much-deserved title.
Which VPN Is More Efficient at Bypassing Censorship?
Catapult Hydra is theoretically great in this aspect because of its bespoke optimization. However, neither of the VPNs with this protocol actually work in China – strange, is it? We tested McAfee VPN directly in the trenches thanks to our few acquaintances in the mainland.
They reported terrible results, with McAfee VPN being blocked virtually every time.
NordVPN’s obfuscation masks your VPN traffic, offering a better prognosis for overcoming Chinese censorship. As expected, the provider displayed superior results right away, working at least 80% of the time, while the rest 20% was remedied by a few minor tweaks.
Obfuscation slows down NordVPN a bit but that’s expected, as the primary goal is to circumvent censorship and not unleash the full speed. Still, in our tests, these servers were fast enough for torrenting, streaming, and even playing Black Ops 6 in bot lobbies.
Before wrapping it up like a burrito, we’ll give the final medal to NordVPN not only because of its superior performance in China but in other countries as well (Russia, Turkey, Iran, …).
Conclusion: NordVPN Is Better Than McAfee VPN
You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to conclude that NordVPN is superior to McAfee VPN. Our McAfee VPN vs NordVPN 2026 duel was simply a journey to discovering how much it’s better, and as you saw, the difference is massive. Is it the same for the price, though?
Apparently, no.
NordVPN is more expensive but the price difference is justified because you get a lot more. Plus, McAfee VPN stores logs, so it’s immediately discarded by our team of experts. Pair this with underwhelming speeds, P2P, streaming, and security, and you get a poisonous recipe.
NordVPN’s recipe is a well-done cake in a Michelin-star restaurant.
Its foundation is sweet and the icing on top makes everything blend perfectly. In this NordVPN vs McAfee VPN duel, we practically haven’t found a single NordVPN downside, except for slightly higher renewal prices, which aren’t unique to this VPN either way.
Henceforth, our judgment is firm. Pick NordVPN over McAfee VPN. If you don’t have enough money, wait until you do and get NordVPN. McAfee VPN isn’t worth your money.
