One of these is a VPN. The other is antivirus software with a tunnel bolted on. NordVPN takes seven of eight rounds. But McAfee Safe Connect wins on introductory price and trails everywhere else, most heavily on speed, streaming, and servers.

Compatibility and Ease of Use Comparison
McAfee Safe Connect covers Windows, ChromeOS, Android, and iOS. Mac is the murky one: the standalone Safe Connect app was withdrawn from macOS, and Mac owners now reach the VPN through the bundled McAfee Security app on a McAfee+ subscription. For better alternatives, check our Mac VPN rankings for 2026.

There’s no Linux client, no router support, and nothing for televisions or streaming boxes. NordVPN adds macOS, Linux with a graphical client, Smart TVs, Apple TV, Fire TV Stick, Nvidia Shield, routers, and browser extensions. Connections establish in a couple of seconds, and the apps behave consistently whichever device you’re on. McAfee’s interface shows its age.

The world map is decorative rather than clickable, connections take noticeably longer, and there’s little beyond a server list and an on switch. Its mobile apps look better than the desktop one, though they still feel a step behind. Device counts favour NordVPN at the entry point: 10 connections against McAfee’s 5, though McAfee’s top-tier bundles lift that cap entirely.
Winner: NordVPN
NordVPN reaches every platform McAfee skips: Linux, routers, Apple TV, Fire TV Stick, and Smart TVs. Its apps are also newer and quicker to connect.
McAfee VPN is Cheaper than NordVPN: Price Comparison
NordVPN sells four tiers across three billing periods. The 2-year Basic option works out to $3.49 a month, discounted more than 69%, and the step-up adds Threat Protection Pro and NordPass. Higher tiers fold in NordLocker cloud storage and Coveron ID protection. Its annual plans start at nearer $5.5 monthly, and month-to-month billing is poor value on either plan.
| 2-Year Price | 1-Year Price | Monthly Price | Renewal Price | |
| NordVPN | $94.23 | $65.88 | $14.99 | $139.08/year |
| McAfee VPN | N/A | $29.99 or $39.99 | N/A | $119.99 |
McAfee sells annual terms only, opening at $29.99 for a VPN-only subscription and $39.99 for the bundle that adds antivirus. Since those cost nearly the same, a standalone VPN makes little sense. The top bundle at $89.99 brings $1M identity theft cover, data clean-up, a password manager, and a file shredder.
Winner: McAfee VPN
Cheaper in year one, and it’s the only round McAfee takes. Read the renewal terms before you celebrate: McAfee’s entry bundle climbs from $39.99 to $119.99, roughly $10 monthly, for a VPN that fails at streaming. NordVPN’s Basic renewal also rises steeply, so neither is a bargain long-term, but McAfee wins the sticker price.
NordVPN is More Secure Than McAfee VPN: Here’s Why
Here’s why NordVPN is safer than McAfee VPN in 2026.
Shared Features
Three things overlap: 256-bit encryption, an automatic kill switch, and split tunneling. Both kill switches severed the connection reliably in testing. Ad blocking exists on both, though not equally. NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro scans downloads for malware, blocks trackers, and filters malicious sites in real time.

McAfee’s equivalent arrives through its Security bundle as web protection, a firewall, and a file shredder, and its antivirus engine is the better malware remover of the two. That’s the one place McAfee’s heritage shows.

Advanced Features
Protocols. NordVPN’s in-house NordLynx builds on WireGuard with a double NAT layer, so servers never store your IP, and it’s part of why NordVPN ranks among the fastest providers. NordWhisper handles filtered networks, and post-quantum encryption is available as a toggle. McAfee relies on Hydra, the same OpenVPN-based protocol Hotspot Shield uses, and offers no post-quantum option.

Double VPN chains two servers in separate countries for two layers of encryption. McAfee has no multi-hop of any kind right now.
Infrastructure. NordVPN operates RAM-only servers, private DNS, and Forward Secrecy. McAfee documents none of these, and its servers write to disk.
Winner: NordVPN
Specialty servers, two proprietary protocols, and post-quantum encryption against a kill switch and split tunneling. McAfee’s antivirus is genuinely better; its VPN isn’t close.
NordVPN and McAfee VPN Don’t Store Logs
This is where the comparison stops being competitive. NordVPN keeps no IP addresses, browsing history, DNS queries, or connection timestamps. Deloitte signed off on that claim in February 2026, marking six audits in a row since 2018, and RAM-only hardware wipes whatever sat in memory on every restart. It appears on our list of verified no-log VPNs as a result.

McAfee’s policy is better than its reputation suggests. The VPN clause states that it does not collect your originating IP address, DNS queries, or details of the apps, services, or sites you reach while connected. It reserves the right to gather telemetry, and the wording sits inside a general policy covering McAfee’s whole product range.

What McAfee lacks is verification. No independent auditor has ever examined that claim, whereas NordVPN has submitted to six. Its servers also write to disk rather than running in RAM, so data persists through a reboot in a way NordVPN’s cannot. Jurisdiction compounds the problem. McAfee is headquartered in the US, a founding 5 Eyes member, so anything can be subpoenaed.
NordVPN operates from Panama, which imposes no retention requirement. McAfee runs on infrastructure inherited from TunnelBear, independently audited, but a borrowed network doesn’t transfer an audited policy.
Winner: NordVPN
Same promise, different evidence. McAfee asks you to take its word. NordVPN has had its word checked six times and keeps nothing to check.
NordVPN is Faster Than McAfee VPN: Speed Tests
We ran nine tests per provider out of Southeastern Europe over 3 days, using UK, US, and Japanese servers, with each app choosing its own protocol.

Here are the results:
| Download Speed Loss | Upload Speed Loss | |
| NordVPN | 18% | 7% |
| McAfee VPN | 59% | 50% |
McAfee surrendered 59% of download throughput on average. On the Japanese server, it dropped to 68 Mbps, roughly a third of what NordVPN held over the same route. Any VPN costs you some speed, but losing half your connection isn’t a tax most people will accept.
| UK (Download/Upload) | US (Download/Upload) | Japan (Download/Upload) | |
| NordVPN | 324.25/18.68 Mbps | 292.75/18.31 Mbps | 223.54/17.85 Mbps |
| McAfee VPN | 227.85/12.77 Mbps | 150.73/8.64 Mbps | 68.51/7.85 Mbps |
Winner: NordVPN
Three times the throughput on distant servers and a fraction of the upload penalty. The winner is clear as day.
NordVPN is Better for Torrenting and Streaming
Here’s what I discovered in practice.
Streaming Performance: NordVPN Easily Wins
McAfee occasionally reaches Netflix US and little else. BBC iPlayer identified it every time, and the tougher platforms never loaded.

NordVPN opened 20+ Netflix catalogs, plus Max, Hulu, and iPlayer. Its browser app spoofs location for sites that check separately, and Smart DNS handles set-top boxes and televisions that refuse VPN software, which keeps free NFL streams within reach. McAfee has no Smart DNS.
Torrenting Performance: NordVPN Again Wins
NordVPN permits P2P across its whole network. The separate P2P category disappeared in 2026 once torrent traffic was enabled fleet-wide, so no special location needs finding. SOCKS5 support pairs it with most clients.

McAfee restricts P2P to a small number of locations. We worked through every server to find them, and being forced onto a distant one costs speed a service this slow can’t spare. Our torrenting VPN guide covers what to look for instead.

Winner: NordVPN
Twenty catalogs against one, and unrestricted P2P against a scavenger hunt. Again, NordVPN wins by a wide margin.
NordVPN Has More Server Locations Than McAfee VPN
Let’s gauge the server breadth of both VPNs and see which one offers more. We won’t focus purely on numbers but on other server-specific features and server variety.
| NordVPN | McAfee VPN | |
| Servers | 9,500 | 2,000+ |
| Countries | 148 | 48 |
| RAM Servers | Yes | No |
| Specialty Servers | Yes | No |
NordVPN reaches 100 more countries on nearly five times the hardware. Beyond the count, its network splits into specialty types McAfee has no version of: Double VPN, Onion Over VPN for reaching Tor without a separate browser, obfuscated servers for censored regions, and dedicated IPs. McAfee offers one uniform pool with no variety and no RAM-only infrastructure.
Winner: NordVPN
There’s no doubt about this one. NordVPN beats McAfee VPN both on server number and variety, plus dedicated IP addresses.
Bypassing Censorship: NordVPN Easily Wins
Catapult Hydra is built partly for restricted networks, which makes McAfee’s results in China more surprising. Our contacts on the mainland reported it was blocked on essentially every attempt. NordVPN’s obfuscated servers disguise VPN traffic as regular HTTPS and connected around 80% of the time, with the remainder resolved by switching locations.
Obfuscation costs some speed, though enough remained for streaming, torrenting, and farming bot lobbies in Call of Duty. The same pattern held in Russia, Turkey, and Iran in our August tests.
Winner: NordVPN
NordVPN was more reliable in China, while other censored regions mostly held the same results. Overall, NordVPN is better for censored countries and those who often travel.
Conclusion: NordVPN Beats McAfee VPN Decisively
NordVPN wins 7 rounds to 1. McAfee Safe Connect takes the price round on first-year cost. It skips Linux, routers, and streaming hardware, has no independent audit of its no-logs claim, no specialty servers, and no Smart DNS. It gives up roughly 60% of your download speed to do it. McAfee’s antivirus is capable, and if you already pay for it, the bundled VPN is a reasonable extra.
Treating it as your main VPN is the mistake. For anything more than that, NordVPN costs a few dollars a month, keeps no logs, and has the audit history to prove it. The 30-day guarantee means testing that claim costs nothing.
